MAURY BEES
Mr. George combined one of his beehives with a hive at Maury. Neither was doing well, but together they will be able to pull their numbers and resources in order to have a better chance. This was a tough summer on the bees - too dry or too wet.
The Maury Garden Club picked up two additional honeybee hives recently. These hives will be used to build additional colonies in the Spring through splits. Each year in Virginia, nearly 40% of all managed hives collapse. Mr. George and Ms. Zablocki are doing their part to use best practices in beekeeping while working closely with Norfolk Beekeepers and other master beekeepers. This has been a challenging year with the early rains and recent draught, but the bees look healthy!
MAURY CHICKENS
Sixteen students from Park Place School visited the Maury chicken coop and fed the birds. One of the students announced that she was going to be a veterinarian.
The birds below (from left to right) are WP, Senior, Peep, Cora, Tweetie and Chip.
As you can see the new ones are laying now too - the first several eggs are smaller and these are almost olive drab when you see them in the light.

WELCOME LETTER
Dear Maury Families,
The Maury PTSA would like to welcome our new and returning families to the 2020-2021 school year. Here at Maury, we are fortunate to have a wonderful group of teachers and staff who are dedicated to guiding our children through their high school years. We hope that with your involvement we can create a strong community of parent volunteers who will work closely with our school to create a nurturing environment for ALL students at Maury.
This school year 2020-2021 will be like no other. Challenges are greater than we ever could have imagined. With your support we can navigate uncharted waters and adjust our goals and expectations in this era of COVID -19.
The Maury PTSA is dedicated to serving the needs of our students. Our goal is for every student to have the opportunity to attend school with all of their needs met, whether that be clean clothes and food, or a positive experience with mentors. We support our students’ efforts by providing needed school supplies, encouraging students to participate in activities such as Reflections, we also give scholarships to a deserving senior(s) etc.
In case that you are wondering what the difference is between the Maury PTSA and Maury Boosters, please note that we have different missions, contributing each in our own way to make Maury an even greater school. The Maury Boosters’ primary focus is on fundraising for clubs, teams and organizations, showing appreciation for our teachers and staff and offering grants for teachers and all organizations.
Some of our efforts on mentoring programs, a student lounge and funding of unpaid school lunch accounts have been cut short due to the pandemic, but we are committed to continuing our work while respecting new Covid-19 related guidelines.
Please, get involved. You and your student(s) can join the PTSA by following this link:
