Black Inventors That Changed the World!
1. Ikea who? Not only was Sarah E. Goode the 1st Black woman to be given a patent, but in 1885 she revolutionized the idea of dual-purpose furniture by creating the cabinet bed. The bed could be folded into a functional work desk to save space in small apartments and homes.
2. Brrrh! Thank you, Alice H. Parker, for creating the first natural gas-fueled furnace in 1919 that helped birth the thermostat that most of us use in our homes today.
3. In the late 1930s, Dr. Charles Drew invented a way to preserve blood plasma, allowing it to be stored and shipped for blood transfusions. Until his discoveries, blood was perishable and not fit for use after about a week. Find a location to donate blood visit redcrossblood.org
4. Sarah Boone invented the ironing board in 1892, a narrow wooden board that had collapsible legs with a padded cover. Prior to this invention, the most common solution for ironing was a simple plank of wood placed across a pair of chairs.
5. Garrett Morgan had several significant inventions, including an improved sewing machine and the gas mask. However, one of Morgan's most influential inventions in the 1920s was one of the 1st three-light traffic light systems.
