From Mr. Wallinger
Hello East Ridge Families,
October is National Bullying Prevention Month and so I wanted to provide you all with some information and resources so that you can further understand the importance of this work, and so you can help us prevent bullying at our school. First, I’d like to highlight some data from PACER’s National Bullying Prevention Center and the National Center for Educational Statistics:
One out of every five (20.2%) of students report being bullied
41% of students who reported being bullied at school indicated that they think the bullying would happen again.
Of those students who reported being bullied, 13% were made fun of, called names, or insulted; 13% were the subject of rumors; 5% were pushed, shoved, tripped, or spit on; and 5% were excluded from activities on purpose.
The reasons for being bullied reported most often by students include physical appearance, race/ethnicity, gender, disability, religion, sexual orientation.
Over the next few weeks I will be visiting classrooms to talk with students about bullying prevention at our school, but you can help too! Talking with your children about bullying is a great way to reinforce the importance of preventing and reporting bullying at school.
Below you will find a list of helpful information and resources related to bullying prevention:
Wishing you and your family all the best,
Mr. Wallinger
Emergency Substitutes Needed
Do you have a Bachelor's Degree (BA) and do you love our East Ridge students and staff? Would you love to work at East Ridge and help when we have unfilled substitute positions? We have a desperate need for substitute teachers, paraeducators, and school assistants! Even if you don’t feel comfortable substitute teaching in a classroom, you could help as a substitute school assistant to cover recesses, which then allows us to use our existing school assistants to teach in classrooms when needed. We can be flexible with scheduling substitute school assistants - recesses are between 11:45-3:05 daily. Substitute teachers can work full days or half days.
If you have a BA, even if that is not in education, we can talk together to see if you might be a great fit for an emergency substitute. Please reach out to Kris Held, kheld@nsd.org, if interested.
Veterans Day
In the month of November, we have the opportunity to pause & reflect on Veterans Day, November 11th. Veterans Day is in remembrance of all U.S. Military veterans- past & present.
Most years, East Ridge has a special assembly to honor our Veterans. This year, we will be having a virtual celebration which will include music, poems & a slideshow dedicated toward all our East Ridge Community Veterans. This event will be hosted LIVE during in person classes on November 10th from 10:20-10:50. A Zoom Link for families to join will be shared at a later date.
We need your help!
If you know a veteran, past or present, that you would like to honor please fill out the Google Form here. These photos will be added to a slideshow shared during our assembly. All submissions are due by November 1st. Thank you!
Would you like to Volunteer?
We love our volunteers at East Ridge! Thank you so much for sharing your time with our community.
As a reminder, all volunteers must complete the volunteer training, background check, and upload proof of Covid-19 vaccination before helping at the school per district policy.

The Great Shakeout is coming Oct. 21
Northshore students and staff will join millions of people across the nation in the Great ShakeOut on Oct 21.
The ShakeOut provides an opportunity for students and staff to practice how to be safe during big earthquakes and to “Drop, Cover and Hold on.” This is also a time when schools can review and update emergency preparedness plans and supplies.
Being prepared at home is just as important as being prepared at school. Families are encouraged to talk about their plan for what to do during an emergency with their students. To help facilitate this conversation, the Great ShakeOut has a number of resources available.
