The Mather Memo

March Edition

Message from the Principal

Spring is Here! Ok, Spring may not actually be here yet, but I am very happy to see the sun more often, the emergence of the grass from under the melting snow makes me look forward to warmer days ahead.

At Mather, there is so much to look forward to. While the hard work in our classes continues, new and additional opportunities for students to engage outside of the classroom are happening, too. Whether you choose a club to participate in virtually or want to get outside and join one of our spring sports (which are opening up), there are opportunities for you. One of note recently, our Black Student Union (BSU) led a powerful conversation on the impact of black heroes both past and present. I am proud of the leadership shown by our students and look forward to the future impact this group will have on our school and our community. This is just one example of the many opportunities to be involved and make Mather Matter to you! See the messages below for ways to get involved!

Keep up the great work! The second semester will be a busy one - make every day count.

Go Rangers!

Counseling Corner

There's a fun contest for seniors to win a customized fleece Mather Rangers' blanket! Students need to fill out a brief form, and upload college acceptances and a picture of themselves celebrating! The first 100 students to complete this correctly will win! Every senior is required to complete 3 applications per senior contract, so all 12th grade students should have at least one acceptance. Direct your seniors to this form! SENIOR BLANKET FORM

Athletics Are Happening At Mather! How to make sure you can play!

If you're interested in playing sports during our spring (starts in March) and summer (starts in April) season please continue to read this important information. Understanding that Winter Sports are just starting, the Spring Sports Season is supposed to start the first week of March. The IHSA (Illinois High School Association) has set the start date for Boys Soccer for March 1, Football for March 3, and Girls Volleyball for March 8th. With that being said, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) and Illinois Department Of Public Health (IDPH) will still need to approve an appropriate starting date for CPS.

If you anticipate playing a sport at Mather you will need to accomplish 2 important tasks in the next few days. Both of these tasks need to be completed before athletes can participate in practices.

1. Register on Mathers Registration for all the sports your student desires to participate in (once the link is clicked, click Registration at the top of the page). This allows us to make sure that we communicate sport-specific information with those registered for that sport. Please see this video if you need help with the registration process.

2. Before a student can participate, we need medical clearance that the student can participate. This form is a Sports Physical After registering in Step 1, you should receive a document which is the common IHSA Sports Physical document. Take this form to a doctor's office or clinic when you schedule an appointment with the student's physician. In the event that you cannot get a physical scheduled prior to the start of the desired sport, you can visit a Minute Clinic, Walgreens , and Physicians Immediate Care which are all located within a few blocks of Mather. For a small fee, they will do a Sports Physical on-site for your student. You can also contact Heartland Alliance to schedule an appointment

If you have any questions please feel free to contact Ken LeComte at kjlecomte@cps.edu
