- During Readers' Workshop, we started to read and learn more about the Rainforest. We read and discussed, Come On Into the Rainforest. We completed research on each layer as well as answered comprehension questions about the book.
- We also read and discussed, The Secrets of the Rainforest. This fun-filled book has hidden pictures in the pages that can only be viewed with a flashlight!
- We read and discussed Dr. Seuss' If I Ran the Rainforest. Then we made a text to self-connection by writing about how we would run the rainforest if we were in charge.
- During CAFE, we did a Reading Assessment. While 1 person worked with the teacher, the rest of the class read about their career, read a story independently, and practiced their skills with story sequence.
- As part of our FUNdation lessons, we learned about the long o that is made by the double vowel sounds oa, oe, and ow. We also learned more about the oi and oy sounds.
- We completed our Unit 11 FUNdations assessment as well as a regular spelling assessment.
Writers' Workshop~
- As Writers, we are working on researching and writing about a Career with which we may be interested in pursuing. As we read and learn more about our career, we are documenting important job information. We will have a Career Share Fair once we have completed this project.
- We are also writing about the layers of the rainforest. Each student is focusing on one layer of the rainforest to research, write about, and illustrate.
- FINALLY...we walked the red carpet and filmed our Opinion~Nomination Letter Writings for the Judges. Be sure to check out the final video production.
- During Grammar, we learned more about adding "Pizzazz" words to our sentences to make them more interesting and exciting.
Mathematicians~
- As mathematicians, we learned more about how to use the Trade-First Subtraction Method when subtracting two-digit by two-digit numbers. We learned this song to help us remember the subtraction steps: More on the top, no need to stop. More on the floor, go next door and get 10 more. If the numbers are the same, 0 is the name.
- We practiced for our End-of-the-Year Math Assessment and then we took the Assessment over a 2 day period.
- We played addition and subtraction games for our Fun-Friday activities. Some favorites included Beat the Calculator, Addition Top-It, and Subtraction Top-It, as well as Salute.
Science~
- During Science, we planted marigold and brassica seeds. We learned that scientists who study plants are called Botanists.
- We viewed and discussed a video about how plants grow. In the video, they conducted an experiment by planting seeds in soil and placing them in varying locations under with specific environment settings ~ by the window with sun, light, and water; In a refrigerator with no water and no light; In the sun with no water. and in the pantry cabinet with water and no sun. We learned that plants do not grow if they have no sun and water. Ultimately, plants need water and sun to grow.
- We also viewed and discussed a video about pollination. Pollination is a way in which plants make seeds so more plants can grow. Butterflies, insects and the wind help flowers pollinate.
Social Studies~
- We had many career share presenters. We discussed the careers we learned about and then determined a career of interest that we might like to pursue.
- We read and discussed a Scholastic News about aphids. We learned that ladybugs are actually defender bugs that defend the plant from aphids. Aphids destroy and kill plants.
