Febuary's TLiM Monthly Focus Habit #5 Seek First to Understand, Then to be Understood- Listen first, then talk
This is the habit of Mutual Understanding
We will model, teach and practice Habit 5 this month. Remember as you are teaching the habits throughout the year that each of the 7 Habits is based on:
-A Principle of effectiveness.
-An effective paradigm (see) that is aligned with the principle.
-Behavior/Practices (do) that produces an effective Result (get).

Our 5th Collective Commitment:
We value 2-way communication and listen to everything before responding.
Big Idea: Practicing habit 5, will help create Win-Wins!!!
Principle: To communicate effectively, we must first understand each other.
Paradigm: Effective- I listen with the intent to understand (vs. Ineffective- I listen with the
intent to reply)
Concepts
Diagnose Before you Prescribe
Take the necessary time and effort to properly
diagnose the symptoms before prescribing solutions.
Autobiographical Responses
Be aware of one of the biggest obstacles in interpersonal communication- our tendency to respond autobiographically, meaning from our own frame of references.
We tend to advise, probe, interpret and evaluate others' messages based on our own experiences and motives.
More Habit 5 Concepts
Reading the Signs
Empathetic Listening
Empathic Listening- reflecting what a person feels and saying it back to them in your
own words. You feel ___________________ about ___________.
Helpful language:
You seem...
So as you see it...
As I get it, you feel...
You must have...
It is not listening to advise, counsel, reply, refute, solve, fix, change, judge, agree, disagree, question, analyze, or figure out.
