HORNET PRIDE:
Choir contracts were due today! If you haven't turned them in, please do so as soon as possible.
Our 7th graders are making excellent progress already! They are learning the ropes of a typical choir rehearsal, exploring our new sight-reading tool (www.sightreadingfactory.com), and building a foundation for healthy singing. In the upcoming week we will be settling into our daily routine, and begin working on our concert repertoire!
If you/your student does not have a choir polo shirt, they may be purchased from Dr. Moebes for $13 for sizes S-XL. XXL available for $15. The fee may be paid in full, or in smaller payments as needed. You will receive a receipt for any payments made. Payments are due by our first concert, October 16th!
HARMONY HORNETS:
Hey, do you like to sing?! We have an after school choir option for any 6th grader, any band OR guitar student! Harmony Hornets will meet in the choir room (G07) on Tuesdays, 3:20-4:15, starting September 19th!
Pick up an information sheet and permission slip from Dr. Moebes any time! You must turn in a permission slip to stay after school for our rehearsals. Please turn them in before our first rehearsal!
Music 6:
6th graders have had a LOT going on in Music 6! They created and shared Artist Presentations about musicians/bands they enjoy. We did a gallery walk, allowing students to take time to check out their classmates' presentations, and listen to music by several artists. We have also begun our unit about our national anthem. In addition to learning to sing it to the best of their ability, students have been learning the history of the piece, and have analyzed recordings of several performances. We are building our vocabulary for describing the music we encounter.
Within the next week, we will continue singing the national anthem, and work in small groups to create an original piece of art - music, movement, rap, skit - that expresses what The Star Spangled Banner truly means. Feel free to review the words of the first verse with your student. There is a Google Doc study guide linked below.
ARTS ALIVE 8:
Contracts were due today! If you haven't turned them in, please do so as soon as possible.
I am truly impressed by the thoughtful conversations these students have been having about ancient Egypt, social situations, and the plot of Verdi's Aida! We have been exploring the classifications of voices in classical music, reviewing the practices of ancient Egyptians, and analyzing the plot of the opera. Students have been working together to create connections between issues that are present in modern times, and those of ancient times.
Within the next week we will watch and listen to a DVD production of the opera during class! As we watch, students will have the opportunity to explore the ways music can be used to express the written word.
All of this is part of the build up to empowering these students to write the words AND music for the show they will perform at our December concert!

Art Room News
Projects are in full steam for all classes. And students seem to be enjoying the processes overall. I am super proud of all my classes and how we are starting to follow expectations more and more, and actually finishing up some of our first projects.
6th Grade
We are working on Optical Art learning how to control line and learning to control line to create the illusion of movement.
7th Grade:
We are working on finishing up our Illuminated Letters. This is a longer project continuing from last week.
8th Grade
We just finished up our first project with the lockers, and moving into Grant Wood’s American Gothic Redo project, in which students will spoof, or modernize Grant Wood’s famous painting depicting the Farmer and woman holding a pitchfork in front of the famous Iowa home. Students are to recreate this using different themes and characters. This develops portrait work, and special relations with perspective and craftsmanship in drawing.
As always, any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me at anytime.
Artfully yours,
Mr Chapman

FMS Counseling: Mrs. Crawford & Mrs. Horstmeier
We are so glad you are here!
Students can see their counselor through the school day as needed. The best way for students to reach out to us is to fill out the School Counseling Referral Form that is available to them on their chrome book via a google form. If there are emergencies, teachers will get students to us. We just want to make sure that students are in their classroom for instruction and not missing out on their education. Sometimes the counselors are in meetings, with another student and we don't want students waiting on us. We get email notifications immediately upon the google form being filled out and we call students down as soon as we can.
OLSAT Testing: 6th graders will test Thursday, September 7th during their 3rd and 4th periods.
