February Newsletter
Ready or not, it's 2019!
First, if you've been in over the last couple of weeks, you may have met our new Program Coordinator, Zena Pesta. We had several really excellent applicants for the position and I think we chose well. We have been getting to know her and, since it's nearly February, can be bold enough to declare it a love fest. Over the next months, Zena will be taking on the creation, logistics and promotion of the programs we provide to the public, keeping track of our calendar and website and, as they say, "other duties as required".
At the end of the month, I will be headed to Albany for the annual Library Advocacy Day. We in Greenwich are fortunate to have the steadfast support of both Senator Betty Little and Assemblywoman Carrie Woerner. Although our State Aid only amounts to about $1,400 per year, we have benefited greatly over the last few years from the State's construction grants for libraries. As with school funding, there is an annual ritual of the Governor low-balling the funding and the legislature negotiating for more. If you'd like to learn more and let the powers that be know that you support library funding, the New York Library Association has made it easy! Just click this link
After much planning and talking and discussing etc., our basement renovation is about to begin. There will be some additional noise and trucks will be taking up some precious parking spaces but it will all be worth it in the end. By this time in May, we will have a new IVH Gill Local History Archive, a new Friends of the Library book sale room, two new classroom/meeting spaces, a lobby exhibit space a bathroom and and a storage room. Fortunately, our own volunteer Bill Tomkins will be acting as project manager, so things should go smoothly and my blood pressure shouldn't increase too much.
Speaking of volunteers, the social event of the season is coming up fast. We know how critical our volunteers are to the success of this library adventure and we want the chance to raise a glass and thank you all properly. If you have volunteered in any way for the library, please take a look at the flyer below and RSVP asap.
And if your New Year's resolutions are already starting to slip, here's a little pep talk from Idris Elba
Hope to see you soon.
