Campion College Newsletter
Term 1, Week 9 - 27 March to 1 April
WEEKLY UPDATE
As Week 9 closes, we look back on what has been an exciting and at times, very challenging, term. Students are well settled into school routines and there is a very positive vibe among our them. Many of our students have had the opportunity to take a 'day out' this week at retreat. It's so important that we take time out of our busy lives every now and then to reflect on what's truly important. We thank the NET team for running our retreats this week.
We would like to take this opportunity to express our gratitude for the support we received from whānau on Wednesday for our strike day. Your support means a lot to us, and we are grateful for your understanding and encouragement during this time.
Holy Week is approaching, starting with Palm Sunday this weekend and continuing throughout next week. This is a sacred time for Catholics all around the world, as we commemorate the passion, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. During Holy Week, there will be several special celebrations held in our church. All students and whānau are warmly welcomed to join us in celebration. Please take note of the following days and times.
Holy Thursday 6 April:
7.00pm: Mass of The Lord's Supper
Good Friday 7 April:
10.00am: Stations of the Cross.
3.00pm: Passion of the Lord
Holy Saturday 8 April:
6.00pm: Easter Vigil
Easter Sunday 9 April:
9.00am: Mass.
Please bring some flowers for the flowering of the Cross.
Just a quick reminder that daylight saving time is ending this weekend in New Zealand. On Sunday, April 2nd at 3:00 am, clocks will be set back one hour to 2:00 am. This means you'll "gain" an extra hour of sleep, but it'll get darker earlier in the evening. Make sure to adjust your clocks accordingly and enjoy the extra hour of rest!

A LENTEN PRAYER
Palm Sunday celebrates the grand entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. The day reminds us of the time when people handed over palm branches for honoring Christ as king. Jesus showed his humility by riding over these branches into the Holy City on a donkey instead of a magnificent stallion. Happy Palm Sunday is also referred to as Passion Sunday. The day starts Holy Week and celebrates Christ’s glory, and yet by Friday, he was crucified.
Often, maybe in the midst of busy lives, or in the flurry of activity around the upcoming Easter holiday, the significance of this special day might get missed. Let's pause to reflect on the importance of Palm Sunday.
Merciful God, as we enter Holy week, turn our hearts again to Jerusalem,
and to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Stir up within us the gift of faith that we may not only praise him with our lips,
but may follow him in the way of the cross.
Amen.
MIHA MĀORI - MĀORI MASS
Kia ora koutou katoa!
We would like to extend a warm invitation to everyone to join us in celebrating a Māori Mass this coming weekend. The Māori Mass is a unique cultural experience that combines elements of Maori tradition and Catholic liturgy. This special Mass is an opportunity to celebrate our faith in a way that is both culturally enriching and spiritually uplifting. Mass begins at 9.00 am on Sunday morning at St Mary's Church. Nau mai, haere mai.
MEET THE TEACHERS
Student progress reports were emailed out last week. These reports will provide you with an overview of your child's progress over the past 8 weeks. We encourage you to take the time to review the report and celebrate your child's achievements.
As part of our commitment to open communication between teachers and parents, we will be hosting a parent afternoon this Monday, 3 April. This is an excellent opportunity for you to discuss your child's progress with individual teachers. If you wish to make an appointment, please call the office on 8679309 or email office@campioncollege.school.nz

CRICKET
On Wednesday 22nd March, the Campion School's girls and boys cricket teams had an incredible day playing with our Gisborne Intermediate whanau. The teams played at Harry Barker Reserve, and we would like to extend a big thanks to Heinrich, the Groundsman, for preparing the pitches for us. Despite the overnight rain, the sun came out, and we were able to proceed with the game.
We would like to commend our Year 7-9 players for their dedication to training and their willingness to have fun - they truly shone on the day. We are also grateful to Joey Turner from Poverty Bay cricket for his unwavering support. Our 1st X1 players also deserve a shout-out for managing and umpiring the game throughout the day.
We would also like to express our gratitude to all the whanau who were able to come and visit us on the day - you guys rock! Overall, the day was a great success, and we can't wait to see what the future holds for our cricket teams. Thank you to everyone who made it possible!

UNIVERSITY SCHOLARSHIPS FOR YEAR 13 STUDENTS
Applying for university scholarships can provide a range of benefits for Year 13 students. Firstly, scholarships can significantly reduce the financial burden of attending university, covering tuition fees, accommodation costs, and even living expenses. This can help to make higher education more accessible to all students. Additionally, being awarded a scholarship can demonstrate to future employers a student's dedication and commitment to their academic and personal development. Scholarships also often come with unique opportunities, such as internships or mentorship programs, which can further enhance a student's learning experience and career prospects. Overall, applying for university scholarships is a valuable investment of time and effort for Year 13 students looking to pursue higher education in 2024. MoneyHub has published a guide to hundreds of scholarships for any student planning to start university in 2024.

STUDENT OPPORTUNITIES
FIRST AID COURSE
The College will be running a First Aid Course on April 24th, which is the first day back to school after the holidays. Although some of you may have already participated in earlier programs, this course is specifically for those who have not yet received First Aid training.
The course will run from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm, and it will cover a range of essential skills and knowledge needed to provide effective First Aid in emergency situations. We believe that it is important for all students to have these skills, as it could potentially save someone's life. For Year 13 students, please note that you may need to complete a Refresher Course before leaving school. This course will be an excellent opportunity to update your skills and knowledge in First Aid. If you are interested in participating in the course, please sign up on the sheet located on the wall opposite the Mentors' rooms. We will follow up with further details and instructions. Don't miss out on this valuable opportunity to learn First Aid and contribute to a safer school community. We look forward to seeing you there!
LEARNER LICENCE COURSE
The college will be offering another Learners Licence Course for those who are interested in obtaining their licence. The course will take place on the 24th, 26th, and 27th of April, with the Licence test scheduled on Friday, the 28th of April.

SACRAMENTAL PROGRAMME
If you wish your child to be Baptised, receive their First Communion or be Confirmed into the Catholic Church please contact Chris Goodwin (Director of Religious Studies) directly at gn@campioncollege.school.nz. An extensive programme will be run with these students in Term 2 in order to prepare them to receive the Sacraments.
CARITAS PURPLE RIBBON LENT APPEAL
In support of the season of Lent, Caritas is again hosting the purple ribbon appeal. Lent leading up to Easter and the resurrection of Jesus is a time for us to reflect on aspects of ourselves. It is a time to make prayer, almsgiving and fasting a priority and wearing the ribbon can act as a reminder of this commitment. Purple was the colour of the robe Pilate placed on Jesus, and while it is associated with repentance or pain, it also represents ambition for growth and dignity.
This year's Caritas theme is John 8;12, “I am the light of the world”,
which is something we should all strive to uphold.
Ribbons will be available from verticals by a donation. We want everyone to get involved and there will be a mystery prize for the vertical that collectively sells the most ribbons. You can bring money to your vertical form teacher, use eftpos in the office, or donate via the KINDO APP here.
