Equine Biting Flies
There are several types, be on the look out!
Each type of fly is an external parasite that irritates the horse all over the body
The flies don't necessarily live on the horse but near it: in tall grass, on trees, and near water. The eggs are laid on hard surfaces like fences, overhangs on buildings and barns which makes outside animals an easy target.
Biting flies are very visible!
The most favorite places for biting flies is on the face, near the tail and at the bottom of the legs by the hoof. It is very common for horses to swat flies away with their tail, so when you see a horse doing that there is a reason!
MOST COMMON BITING FLIES
Horse fly
Only FEMALES bite animals! They only strike during the day and are completely inactive at night. Apart from the normal swelling, irritation and inflammation these flies can cause blood diseases like equine anemia.
Black fly
Females are the biters! They are most active during the day and go towards thin areas of skin, for easy access. Most common symptoms are itching, swelling and inflammation.
Yellow fly
Females are the biters! Usually found during summer and early fall; most active during the day due to temperature. The most common symptoms are pain and itchiness but can cause more sever reactions if the horse is allergic.
