From the Principal

Dear Parents and Carers,

Next week we introduce Wellness Week as a way to refresh and renew ourselves. Staff and students will have the opportunity to engage in a variety of activities to build their wellbeing toolkit and we even have something for the parents, a coffee van on site next Thursday morning from 7:30-9:00am.

Special cohort prayer services were held this week for Year 2 and 4 and it was great to have parents involved in these liturgies. Using Kalyara Mia allowed us to have the space to involve parents and Monsignor in the faith formation of our students. With the Feast of St Mary Mackillop this week and the Assumption next week there are many important liturgical events for the school to celebrate.

The Book Week Dress Up Parade for Pre-Primary to Year 6 will be held on Monday, 22 August at 9am on the outside courts. We look forward to seeing the wonderful book characters on display during the parade. We also have our 'Footy Colours' free dress day coming up.

Students were lucky enough to participate in a Book Week incursion this week called ‘Story Quest’ and were taken on quite an interactive adventure.

Our Year 2 classes received Certificates of Merit for their Performing Arts Choral Speech - congratulations.

With the Performing Arts well underway, Tournament of Minds in full swing, Science Week almost upon us and a Father’s Day Breakfast to look forward to (thank you P&F) we are excited for the term ahead.

God Bless and keep safe.

Feast of Assumption

The Feast of the Assumption is one of the most important feast days of the year and a Holy Day of Obligation on the official Roman Catholic Church calendar.

By tradition, the holy day is observed every August 15th. This year, the Feast of the Assumption occurs on Monday, 15 August 2022.

According to Roman Catholic theology, Mary was "assumed body and soul into heavenly glory" several years after her son, Jesus, ascended into heaven.

Students will learn about this important Feast Day in their Religious Education classes this week at their developmentally appropriate level.

Vinnies Winter Appeal Ends

The Vinnies Winter Appeal has concluded for 2022. Thank you to everyone who was able to donate sleeping bags and blankets, as well as monetary donations for St Vincent de Paul. Last Friday the initiative finished with a Pyjama Day for all classes.

In total we raised $544.60. What an amazing effort!

Tomorrow St Vincent de Paul will come to collect the sleeping bags and blankets we have collected to take to those in our local community who need them. What a great way to live our motto, “Charity & Peace” in the real world.

Wellness Week - Week 5

Week 5 will see our staff and students enter Wellness Week for Term 3.

This week (Mon 15 – Fri 19 August) will see our students explore different aspects of their wellbeing (physical, mental, social/emotional and spiritual) as well as providing opportunities to practise some self-care habits.

Students will not have set homework during Week 5 and parents are asked to only book meetings with teachers for urgent matters.

Parents are also welcome to access the Coffee Van that will be parked in the Staff Carpark on York Street from 7:30-9:00am on Thursday 18 August. Who doesn’t like a coffee to start their morning on the right note!

We look forward to exploring our wellbeing and building our toolkit to ensure we can take on the challenges life throws our way with confidence and optimism.

National Science Week

National Science Week next takes place on 13-21 August 2022 all over Australia.

The school theme for National Science Week in 2022 is Glass: More than meets the eye.

It is based on the UN International Year of Glass. It will celebrate the many roles that glass plays in our lives – from phone screens to optical fibre to glassware in labs – plus investigating glass as a part of our sustainable future. The uses for and intrinsic nature of glass in science make it a suitable topic for investigation across all strands of science education.

Students will explore a range of lesson plans, activities, demonstrations and investigations over the course of Week 5 to further deepen their knowledge and love of science.

We look forward to sharing these via our social media channels.

Notice for Withdrawals

Dear Parents and Carers with students in Pre-Kindy to Year 5.

To assist us with planning for next year, could you please advise the office if your child is not returning to St Columba’s next year (if you haven’t already done so). Families are obliged to provide at least one term’s notice in writing of their intention to remove a child from the school, otherwise a full term’s fees may be charged.

For children leaving the school, please indicate which school they will be attending next year.

Enrolment - we welcome new families

We'd love more families to join us in upper primary - there is so much on offer at St Columba's. We offer tours of the school on Mondays and Thursdays.

P&F News

Hi Everyone,

The P&F were finally able to get together in person for the first time this year to hold our 5th meeting on Tuesday. What a relief. It was a great meeting with some productive outcomes that will benefit both our children and school community as a whole. We were also fortunate to have Siobhan Allen, Director of CSPWA come out and share with us the upcoming changes to P&F groups from 2023.

Siobhan has requested if we could all please fill out the following survey. The survey aims to capture our perspective on issues/concerns that impact our children's health, wellbeing and learning. This information will inform future federal Government policy and drive what funding is received and provide evidence as to how parent engagement can enhance student learning and wellbeing.

The survey link is:

A friendly reminder that this Friday, 12 August is the last day to purchase Tea Towels (whole school) and Melamine Plates (PreK and Kindy). Please get your orders in so you don't miss out.

Calling all dads/male carers/superheroes! Save the Date. Fathers Day Breakfast will be held on Friday, 2 September, 7:30am-8:50am in the Kalyara Mia. More information to come.

Have a lovely week everyone.

Father's Day Breakfast - Friday 2 September

Calling all Dads and Father Figures,

You are invited to the Father's Day Breakfast Event, run by our P & F Team, on Friday, 2 September from 7:30 - 9:00am in Kalyara Mia (Undercover Area).

This event is for dads and father figures who have children in Pre-Primary to Year 6. (Kindy and Pre-Kindy Dads will have a separate event. Class teachers will send communications regarding this.)

The P & F will provide a sausage sizzle breakfast and a selection of baked goods. #yesplease

Dads and their children are welcome to dress in "Superhero" attire for the event. Just for a bit of extra fun! (completely optional). Games will also be available for those who wish to participate.

We ask Dads (or mums on their behalf) to reply to our Expression of Interest form below to allow the P & F to ascertain numbers for catering purposes. We ask for this to be completed by COB Friday, 19 August.

Formal communications will follow from the school.

We are excited to be able to offer this community event for our dads and father figures.

Regards,

P & F Team

Dads of St. Columba's Footy Tipping 2022

Hello St. Columba’s Families,

Never a dull moment in footy tipping! Some strong tipping form at the top of the table by Binns Clan (David B) this week to consolidate his lead with 2 rounds to go.

The bolter for the week was Naso Knows (Mel N) winning Round 21 with 7 tips and that all important 2 point margin. Where has this form been over the year I ask!

Same could be said of the Eagles effort for JK’s last game.

Well done too to Eddies Mate (Dan M) and The Mighty De’s (Nelsen D) also with 7 tips this round and 12 and 30 point respective margins.

The Overall Leader board:

1. Binns Clan – David B – 122 points

2. The Merenda Family – Lee M - 120 points

3. Freo Donovan – Pat D - 118 points

4. Kinnane Dockers – Tristan K - 118 points

5. Trish09 – Tricia A – 116 points

6. Scarymans - Mark S – 115 points

7. Captain Shuey – Amelie D – 113 points

8. Oggace – Brendon O – 112 points

9. BrenBristow18 – Ben B - 111

10. JChamps – Jennie D - 110 points

2 exciting rounds remaining, Round 22 starts Friday night with St Kilda hosting Brisbane. The game starts 5:50pm WA time.

With the two final rounds remaining this will see my end to coordinating DOSCA Footy Tipping with Amelie and Lily heading to high school next year. In order to support a smooth transition of DOSCA Footy Tipping into 2023 and beyond I would appreciate hearing from anyone that would like to take on coordination of the tipping comp for 2023.

I can be contacted on 0447 730 656.

Happy tipping!

Regards,

Todd Dawson
