Principal's Update
Dear Lakeview Families,
Thank you to all of our families and to our teachers for a successful Conference Week. Open lines of communication are critical between home and school. Another important aspect of a student’s day is being present at school. According to multiple studies, missing several days of school over the course of a school year has a significant impact on achievement. Arriving to school on time is also critical. Instruction begins when students come through the door.
Please know that breakfast is served in the Café starting at 8:00 and is free for all students. Taking advantage of school breakfast could buy you some time in the morning.
As a reminder the acceptance period for the 2020/2021 school year opens on Monday, Feb. 10, through 5 p.m., Friday, Feb. 21.
If you are a parent of a current 5th grade student you will need to log into the Student Reservation System to accept your child’s seat for Middle School if you applied for a Fundamental Middle School.
Also, remember that our Feb. PTA Meeting is Dine with the Dolphins on Thursday, Feb. 20th from 6-8 at TMMS. This is always a fun event!
Happy Valentine’s Day!!!!
Thank you,
Principal Baker
School Happenings
Composting/Soil Making New to Lakeview!
• January: Build three-tiered composter! Implement cafeteria kitchen scraps and teacher lounge composting; begin educating students.
• February: Implement student composting in the cafeteria – fruits and vegetables only. Implement a Share Table in the Cafeteria to cut down on cafeteria waste.
• March: Offer individual classrooms the opportunity to participate in food scrap collection for snacks or special activities.
Again, we in the garden are extremely excited and honored to be able to bring this service to our students at Lakeview. Not only will we be helping to make Lakeview more sustainable and eco-friendly, but we will be using the program to teach our students to be doing the same in the future. Thank you so much for your support of all our garden initiatives!
News from the PTA
We are excited for our annual Dine with the Dolphins celebration on Thursday, February 20, 2020. This event will be held at Thurgood Marshall Fundamental Middle School at 6pm. It is the required PTA meeting for this month. It is a great opportunity to win some great prizes, while helping to raise money for our "little school with the big heart". Dine with the Dolphins is our BIGGEST fundraiser of the year!
School Updates
Counselor's Reef
Hello Lakeview Families! Happy Valentine’s Day!
Classroom Counseling Lessons are very important to my counseling program here at Lakeview. Each month, I am in each classroom focusing on specific developmental areas to help students with academic, personal/social and career skills. I am visible so that all students know me and when a problem occurs, they feel comfortable coming to me. Here’s an overview of what I’ve been doing with the students during the school year so that you can reinforce this at home. In September, all the classes talked about including everyone and ‘starting with hello’.
Kindergarten- We have learned what it means to use “I-Care Language”, to use our manners,
recognize our feelings and that our “Hands are for Helping and not Hurting.” We’ve also discussed rules that keep us safe and they practiced using their “I mean business voice” and safety stop signs.
First Grade- We have enjoyed building self-esteem and learning social skills! We’ve made a friendship spider web and written each other notes to fill each other’s buckets, read stories,
discussed manners and talked about how to not get a Tattle Tongue.
Second Grade- We have had a great time with Friendship Skills. We have learned the importance
of being ourselves and talked about how to not “Crinkle” someone else with your words and actions.
We also discussed knowing when to filter our comments to be thoughtful of someone’s feelings.
Third Grade- We have discussed trying to see another’s point of view and what it means to have
empathy, read stories of acts of kindness and the students wrote presents to someone they care about
in December. Last month we discussed practicing tolerance and acceptance of other’s differences.
Fourth Grade- We have focused on each student’s impact on a community of caring, support and
encouragement, setting personal goals, and how to be the best person we can be. We also talked about cliques and to work on including everyone and discussed growth mindset vs. fixed mindset.
Fifth Grade – We have talked about positive attitudes, goal setting and organization, and did some self-discovery with an interest/career survey. We also discussed relational aggression and how we should treat our friends.
A reminder about the homework helpline…The helpline is staffed by teachers who are certified in math, science, language arts and social studies and offers free homework help for students in grades 1-12. The helpline is available at (727) 547-7223 from 5-8 p.m. Mon. through Thurs. on all school days except when there is no school the following day.
The character trait for February is Tolerance. Tolerance means respecting the individual differences, views, and beliefs of other people. What does tolerance look like? Accepting the opinions of others even if you disagree…standing up for students who are picked on…accepting differences between yourself, family members, friends, teammates, teachers, etc….not making negative comments about someone’s race, religion, culture, family, opinions or appearance. You can help teach your children tolerance at home by having conversations and modeling tolerance for them with other people.
As always, if you have a concern about your student, you can email me at altmank@pcsb.org and we can work together to decide the next steps.
