Christopher Columbus
Who Sailed the Ocean Blue in 1492?
Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was born in Genoa, Italy but moved to Portugal to try to get funding from Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand for an expedition. He believed that he could reach Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic Ocean. It took him several years to convince the King and Queen to fund his expedition, but finally they agreed. Christopher Columbus had promised the King and Queen riches, new territory, and Catholic converts. Christopher Columbus's three ships set sail on August 3rd, 1492. These three ships went by the names of the Nina, the Pinta, and the Santa Maria. The Nina and the Pinta were caravels. Christopher Columbus was aboard the larger Santa Maria. Together, the ships carried around 90 sailors and a years worth of supplies. On October 12, 1942 the long journey had finally ended when the lookout saw land. The three ships had landed on an island in the Bahamas, however Columbus thought he had landed in Asia. He named the island San Salvador, which means "Holy Savior". He also visited another island that he named Hispaniola, this was were he met a group of people called the Taino. Since Christopher Columbus thought that he had landed in Asia he called these people Indians. Columbus stayed around for about three months collecting, gold, exotic plants, and animals. After those three months he returned to Spain. In the end, Christopher Columbus's expedition impacted many things. One of the larger things was the Columbian Exchange. This would bring plants, animals, and disease back and forth between the New World and Europe.

Journal Entry
The day is October 12, 1492 and my long journey has finally come to an end. It all started back when I tried and tried to convince Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand to finance my expedition. I believed that I could reach Asia by sailing west across the Atlantic. No one believed me, but here I am. I have finally reached land. The journey was a lot longer than I believed it would be. In fact, I had began to regret my decision to follow through with this expedition in the first place. I had began to doubt my own theory. However, I am glad that I did not give up. I will bring many great things back to Europe. I must go start exploring right away!
