As our school community looks forward to the first long weekend of the year, this is a good time to…
salute the student athletes and coaches who helped HHS to win its fourth straight Boston Globe Holmes Award, given annually to the school in our division with the highest combined winning percentage in all varsity sports; and
honor the success of our teams, not only in competition, but, more importantly, in upholding core values like service and sportsmanship.
In other news:
A well-deserving HHS senior, Evan Doherty, was named the “Opry Award” winner for October; like its namesake, our school’s much-loved comfort dog, the new award seeks to recognize a student who improves school climate and helps others to feel comfortable at HHS.
The entire HHS faculty engaged in a Safe Schools workshop during release time on Wednesday afternoon. Together with colleagues from the middle school, HHS teachers gained new understanding of topics related to gender identity, sexual orientation, and school climate. The training, delivered by staff from the MA Department of Elementary and Secondary Education, provides further evidence of our determination to build an inclusive school community where everyone feels a genuine sense of belonging.
At its game tonight, the HHS volleyball team will partner with the Side-Out Foundation to raise awareness and funds for the treatment of breast cancer. An annual tradition at HHS, the Dig Pink event offers another example of how Hingham teams make a positive difference in the community. So, we hope you’ll find something pink to wear, and come on out to HHS later today for some exciting volleyball action!
A few reminders:
As we contend with the start of the cold and flu season, along with the persistence of COVID-related absences, please remain cognizant of our school’s attendance policy, which can be found on p. 17 of the Student Handbook.
Like schools everywhere, HHS continues to battle a staffing shortage. In fact, throughout the past week, we could have used at least one more substitute teacher every day. If you can help as a substitute teacher or instructional assistant, please apply to join our team of exceptional educators. No teaching experience or special expertise is required. You just need a desire to make a positive difference in the life of your community.
HHS will be hosting 18 students (all sophomores and juniors) from France, in just a few weeks (10/27 - 11/5), and we still need two host families for the faculty chaperones. If you can help, please contact Mr. Porter (aporter@hinghamschools.org) for more information.
The daily notices and full school calendar can always be viewed on the HHS website. Look for details on the website and in our weekly PTO newsletter.
Have a great long weekend!

HHS fans had plenty to cheer about in the early minutes of a big game against Whitman-Hanson last Friday.
