D103 Update on Remote Learning
Good Evening,
This is a reminder that tomorrow, Friday, April 17, 2020, is a Remote Learning Professional Development day for all certified staff members. Assignments will not be emailed for Friday and teachers will not conduct office hours so that they may be fully present in the planned building and team meetings. On Friday, your children may use that time to complete any missing assignments, learn to code, virtually take an international trip to a museum, or pick an activity from a list of these no-tech learning activities. If Remote Learning continues through the remainder of the school year, additional Remote Learning Professional Development days are as follows:
Friday, May 1, 2020* (Remote Professional Development Day 3)
Friday, May 15, 2020* (Remote Professional Development Day 4)
Friday, May 29, 2020* (Remote Professional Development Day 5)
* May 2020 dates are tentative and are subject to change based on current circumstances at the time.
Daily Learning Assignment Emails - Beginning Sunday, April 19, 2020, teachers will send the daily email between 7-9 p.m. the evening before learning begins. This is a slight change from the previous practice of sending the email at 7 p.m. We believe this change will still provide parents the opportunity to review assignments with their children before their own workday starts and give teachers some extra time in the evening. Please understand that many of our teachers are not available to answer emails in the evening. If you have questions about the daily assignments you can email them in the evening, but teachers are not expected to respond until the next day’s office hours.
Office Hours - Teachers will be available to respond to parent and student questions during office hours from 8-10 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. Setting office hours will provide consistent expectations for parents, students and teachers. Outside of these office hours, teachers are providing feedback on student assignments and virtually collaborating with their colleagues to plan future learning activities.
Parent Survey Results - Thank you for taking the time to provide us with your feedback! There were 257 parents who responded to the survey providing us with critical input to continue improving our Remote Learning Plan. Results to the survey will be shared in a Board Report that will be available on the District 103 website tomorrow, Friday, April 17, 2020, after 4 p.m. and will be discussed at the Board of Education meeting (hosted virtually) on Tuesday, April 21, 2020, at 7 p.m.
Playgrounds - As a result of Governor Pritzker's executive order, all playgrounds in Lincolnshire, including school playgrounds, will be closed to the public until April 30, 2020, in order to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Please refrain from accessing the playgrounds at this time.
Time Allocated for Instructional Activities - In the parent survey, a few respondents asked why the time allocated for instructional activities decreased. Initially, when schools closed and the district began providing online learning activities for students, schools were using ISBE’s guidance for eLearning Days. Illinois School Code allows schools to use up to 5 eLearning Days in a calendar year when a school must close unexpectedly, meaning closures due to inclement weather, power outages, etc. A requirement for eLearning Days is to provide 5 clock hours of instruction. After Illinois school closures were extended, the Illinois State Board of Education released guidance for Remote Learning Days. Remote Learning Days refers to the extended school closure orders that we are currently under. In the State issued Remote Learning Guidance, the minutes allocated to instructional activities were reduced. There is a significant difference in the type of learning that can be sustained during a one or two-day school closure to closing during a national pandemic. The district has created a plan that provides continuous learning opportunities and is sustainable. For parents who are asking for additional learning opportunities, the district is looking to provide optional activities for students. We will communicate those learning opportunities soon. We have coordinated our times with Districts 96, and 102, the other Stevenson High School (SHS) feeder districts. Additionally, we continue to regularly articulate our plans to ensure that students will be successful in the fall both in District 103 and SHS.
