Transportation, Valentine's Day, and Black History
This month we will begin learning about Transportation. Children will explore how people move from one place to another using different methods of transportation. We will learn about the different vehicles people use in our community and explore why we have to use these vehicles. We will compare these vehicles and talk about how they are the same and how they are different.
We will also learn about community workers and the different vehicles they use. Children will talk about how to stay safe when using transportation. Through centers, students will explore and experiment to further their understanding and critical thinking about the unit.
In addition to learning about transportation, we will be discussing Valentine's Day and Black History this month. During the week of Valentine's Day, we will participate in music and movement activities, read stories and poems, and focus on friendship and love. To introduce the importance of Black History to our youngest learners, we will engage in songs and dances to honor various styles of music and learn about the history of the Apollo Theater! We will even be performing a song for you!
In math we will continue to identify, match, and sort shapes, as well as begin work with patterns. In addition to numerical and geometric patterns, students will look for patterns in music, movement and common objects.

The Power Of Playdough!
Squishing, rolling, sculpting, molding . . . young children love to play with playdough. Add some props from around the home and playdough play becomes a powerful way to support your child’s learning. This simple preschool staple lets children use their imaginations and strengthen the small muscles in their fingers—the same muscles they will one day use to hold a pencil and write. Using playdough with you, a friend, or siblings supports your child’s social skills such as sharing, taking turns, and enjoying being with other people. Playdough also encourages children’s language and literacy, science, and math skills—all at the same time!
- Continue to practice zipping, buttoning and snapping pants, sweaters and jackets with your child.
- As the weather begins to change, please make sure all jackets, sweaters, hats and extra clothing is labeled.
- Your child should have a complete change of clothing at school.
- Please remember to send washed blankets back to school on Monday.
- Please continue to read with your child each day.
As always, thank you for your cooperation.
