Galm Elementary School
Campus Update: July 29, 2020
Message from Ms. Alongi
Good afternoon Dolphin Families,
We are very excited about the upcoming school year and can’t wait to begin working with our dolphins. We have exciting news to share! Mr. Johnson, our vice principal, was appointed as principal of Fernandez Elementary School. We will miss him, but know he will continue to do amazing things in his new role.
I know that this year brings some changes, but please know that our district is working on providing a safe environment with a focus on student learning. Plans are still being worked on by campus and district task forces, and as always, I encourage you to visit nisd.net for all the latest district updates.
Here are some things I do know about the upcoming year:
Virtual learning will take place the first two weeks of school and our building will be open to receive students September 8th.
The school day has been extended to 3:10pm.
The district will be sending out a parent survey August 3 so that you may choose whether you would like your student to participate in Virtual Learning or In-Person learning after the first two weeks of Virtual Learning.
Due to safety concerns, parents and visitors will not be allowed to enter the school building.
All staff and students 5 years and older will wear a face masks that covers the nose and mouth.
The district is working on a virtual school supply list.
Galm has established an Operational Task Force in order to ensure a safe start to the school year.
We will be using a new Learning Management System called Schoology to replace the Google Classrooms we used last year.
Northside is working on creating a Virtual Help Desk for students to get support after-hours and on the weekend.
Meet the Teacher will be virtual this year.
We will continue to share out information and look forward to introducing our new VP, once appointed. We know that we do not have all the answers right now, but we are working tirelessly to put together a plan that is best for our students, staff, and families. The district has been emailing families a Back. Together. Better. Newsletter on Wednesdays. Please make sure to read it for updates. Thank you for your understanding and for your continual support.
Back. Together. Better.
GO DOLPHINS!
Ms. Alongi
Principal
A Message From The District
At Northside ISD, we are as anxious as our students and parents to once again be back together. As we prepare for the 2020-2021 school year, guidelines will be provided to help ensure a safe and healthy teaching and learning environment.
The safety of our students and staff are at the forefront of all planning. Northside is prepared to help prevent, mitigate and respond to the COVID-19 virus, and this will require our collective efforts.
NISD will begin the school year on Monday, Aug. 24 with all virtual learning. There will be no in-person instruction until at least the Tuesday after Labor Day, Sept. 8.
NISD will continue to closely monitor the situation and take guidance from Metro Health Department, Texas Department of State Health Services, and the Center for Disease Control. But as we continue through these unprecedented times, we ask everyone to be mindful of the key preventative measures of wearing masks, social distancing, washing hands thoroughly, and staying home when sick.
Beginning the 2020 - 2021 School Year
In an effort to keep our community aware of new developments, the district will be emailing updates to parents every two weeks. They will send these updates to the email addresses that were provided to us during registration. There is no need to "opt in", as these emails will be sent automatically.
With that being said, the virtual learning you and your child will experience this year will be different from what you experienced last spring. The district will continue its mission of ensuring our students have the technology they need to participate and learn. We will also utilize a new learning management system call Schoology that will improve our ability to provide face to face instruction and support to your student. 2020 - 2021 School Supply List
As you know, our traditional school supply list consisted of many items. However, as we begin the school year, much of your child's work will now be completed on devices from home. As your child engages in virtual learning, we have adjusted our supply list to better meet your child's needs:
Pre-K: Northside ISD will provide school supplies for Pre-K students
Virtual Elementary K-5 School Supply List
5 pre-sharpened pencils or mechanical pencils
2 pocket and brad folders
1 box of 24 crayons
1 Basic Classic Marker Set (10)
1 pair of scissors
2 glue sticks
3 composition notebooks
1 pkg. wide ruled loose leaf paper
1 computer/device (available to provide by NISD)
1 set of earbuds/earphones (optional)
1 supply box
1 backpack
(replenish as needed)
Other things to consider:
-A set of earbuds/earphones is optional, but can help ensure you don't disturb those around you (they can also help drown out outside noise and minimize distractions).
-We are beginning our year at learning at home, and it may seem like owning a backpack is unnecessary. However, owning a backpack to store your device and other supplies could be useful when you move to another location around your home to work for a change of scenery.

On July 14, the NISD Board of Trustees took action to amend the 2020-2021 District school calendar. The first day of school remains Aug. 24, 2020. The changes, while minor, are reflected below:
- Moving of the Oct. 12 staff development day to Nov. 3 so students will not be in school buildings during voting on Election Day.
- Grading periods for secondary students have been changed from 6 week grading periods to 9 week grading periods to provide more time for remediation and enrichment and allow for fewer transitions.
- An additional 15 minutes will be added to each school day to provide additional instructional minutes.
