Coker Fair
Shout out to the forty-two certified staff members have volunteered their time at our upcoming Coker Fair!
PTA still has plenty of volunteer spots available for the remaining 23 certified staff members to sign up for on the Teacher Fair Sign-Up or the regular Fair Sign Up. Please notify me ASAP if you have extenuating circumstances that prevent you from serving at this year's event.
Superintendent Awards
The Superintendent's Awards are presented by Dr. Brian G. Gottardy to employees, students, volunteers and community members who display exceptional performance in their action and behavior in an effort to continue the district's tradition of excellence.
This is a reminder that Tiffany will be accepting nominations for the first reception through October 30th. All grade level chairs are asked to lead a discussion and nominate a candidate for this prestigious award.
A new nomination form has been developed. You can find information on the awards program, including revised judging criteria and the nomination form here: http://www.neisd.net/ComRel/SupAwards.html.
Please download the new form to your computer, fill out completely, and get my approval before submitting. Save and email the form as an attachment to tgill@neisd.net.
Thank you, and we look forward to learning about all the wonderful people who are deserving of this recognition.

Workrooms
Thank you to Suzette and Regina for stocking the workroom areas to meet campus needs. Please be mindful that supplies are for staff work only. Students need to provide their own supplies. If you have a student in need, please contact Lupe Negley.
We are reserving the office workroom for Admin and Staff only. This is the best location for staff to use for class sets. We have posted signs for PTA and volunteers/ helpers to use the PTA workroom and central teacher workroom(in the vintage building). In addition, volunteers are being reminded to give teachers and staff priority when using copiers and equipment. Please let us know if you have any questions or needs.
Leadership Quote--October
“Real leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determination.” – Unknown
Caught Being a Leader
Diana Lopez our new first grade dual language stepped up to the plate and volunteered to organized the Incredible Pizza Family Night for our Outreach Committee. Way to go Ms. Lopez for spearheading that wonderful event.
Leader in Me Implementation
By Week 8 students will need to set new monthly personal and academic goals. Although you may choose a different time frame, any less than one month is too short to change behavior and any more than one month may be too long for younger students. You now have a classroom of students who have learned the life skills they will refer to throughout their lives.
Rather than specific "school behavior," the 7 Habits transfer to real-world situations. Ask students for real-world situations. Ask students for real-world connections they experience or witness.
Guide students through the Habit 7 section of The Leader in Me Activity Guide. Read the Habit 7 story from The 7 Habits of Happy Kids. Rotate leadership role assignments.

Coker Handbook Tidbits-Classroom Visitation
For everyone's protection, NO visitors are ever to go to classrooms without first signing in and obtaining a visitor’s badge at the front door. If you see anyone on campus without a visitor's badge, immediately escort the person to check in at the front door and please notify the office.
All staff members must wear his or her badge at all times. Likewise, substitutes and visitors must wear a badge at all times. Even before school, if you see someone without a badge, please ask them if you can help them and escort them to the front door for a pass. Remind parents that this is for the safety of everyone in our building, especially the children.
Expectations for all visitors (adults, students, young children and employee's family members are further outlined in the Coker Handbook.
Click here to access the Handbook for detailed information.
Coker Handbook Tidbits-Supervision of Students
Children must be supervised at all times in order to assure safety! The classroom teacher is responsible for the safety of the students in his/her classroom. Classroom teachers are required to supervise students in classrooms, at the restroom, drinking fountain, during passing periods (to/from PE/Music/Lunch/Dismissal) in the library, and at recess.
Finding Alternatives to Withholding Recess
NEISD is among the 44% of school districts across the nation that prohibit withholding recess. Increasingly, more and more parents do not like schools to withhold recess as a form of punishment. The academic benefits of recess and physical activity are well documented. For alternatives to withholding recess, view "60 Alternatives to Withholding Recess".
Some of the zero-cost alternatives include:
- read outdoors
- have extra art time
- make deliveries to the office
- play a favorite game or puzzle
- read to a younger class
- dance in the classroom
