How Can We Begin to Get Ready for the Fall?
I hope you are enjoying time with your children and family. Here are a few questions for you to help ensure your family is ready for starting back this fall. 1. Have you completed your child's online registration if your child was in Rock Hill Schools last year and is returning? We need all parents of students who were in Rock Hill Schools last year and are returning to CPES to update their child's registration at the following link: https://www.rock-hill.k12.sc.us/domain/2563 Please be very careful when updating your physical address, email addresses and phone numbers. (If you don't receive information next fall, it is most likely that you put in one of these in error.) Be sure to include anyone you want to pick up your child or visit him/her during lunch as an emergency contact. This information goes straight into our data management system. We will send out class assignments and give out car pickup tags to only those families who complete their child's registration. Class assignments will go out on August 3. 2. Have you completed your child's registration if he/she is new to Rock Hill Schools? This registration site is currently open (and different from the returning student registration) and should be completed at the following link: https://www.rock-hill.k12.sc.us/domain/2561 3. Do you know what school supplies your child needs? Items listed do not include a bookbag or water bottle that students may need. If you need assistance with securing school supplies for your child, please contact our main office. 4. Have you registered if you need child care through the Challenger After School Program? Challenger is the district's after school child care program located at Cherry Park. You can go ahead and register for it at the following link: https://www.rock-hill.k12.sc.us/domain/2578 Usually, you need to register two weeks in advance of the first day of school for your child to start on that first day. (Be sure to complete your application by July 30 for starting on August 15.) 5. Have you completed your child's lunch application for free/reduced lunch if you need it? This year, unlike the past 2 years, families will need to pay for their child's lunch unless they apply for free or reduced lunch. Here is the link for the lunch application: https://www.lunchapplication.com/ 6. Did you indicate on your child's registration if you needed School of Choice Transportation? There should be a question on that registration form to let our Transportation Office know if you need our bus service. If you have questions, contact mailto:bushelp@rhmail.org. 7. Have you noted important dates and times? Our Open House will be Thursday, August 11 from 5:00-7:00 PM. This will be a time when parents and children can come and visit your child's classes and meet their teachers. The first day of school is Monday, August 15. Our school day begins at 7:45 and ends at 2:10. (Our dismissal time is a change from last year.) The District Calendar is below and please go ahead and put the dates for the year from it on your personal calendar. 8. Have you reviewed school policies in our "CPES Family Handbook?" This answers lots and lots of questions and we ask that you consult that before sending an email or making a phone call to ask a question. It is located below. I hope you will focus on the "5 P's" (Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance) and get ahead of tasks to ensure your child has a great start to the new year. Enjoy the best of the rest of your summer. We look forward to seeing you soon.
Strength and Blessings,
Mr. Maness
P.S. We want to welcome back Meriam Polanco who will be a Spanish Interventionist with us. Ms. Polanco is a former 3rd grade Spanish teacher at CP. We also want to welcome Caroline Brouillet as our new French kindergarten assistant and Alex Mahoney as a half-time resource teacher. We are so glad each of them will be with us.
Kindergarten Screenings (For Rising Kindergarten Students)
All students beginning kindergarten in Rock Hill Schools will complete this screening for this fall. This screening helps us know a little about your child as we place students in classes this summer. Your child will come to Cherry Park Elementary (Main Office entrance off of Caswell Street) and work with one of our English-speaking Kindergarten teachers for 10-15 minutes. If your child is unable to attend the screening on the following dates, we will screen your child during the first week of kindergarten.
Please note - your child must be registered to attend this screening. If you have questions about registration or need verification that you have fully registered your child, please call (803) 985-2255. All registration information can be found at https://www.rock-hill.k12.sc.us/Page/9107

Summer Notes and Reminders
Openings for Kindergarten and First Grade French--Currently, we still have some openings for kindergarten and first grade French for this fall. (Students do not have to know French to enroll.) Please let friends and family members know about this amazing opportunity for their children to learn a second language. According to the Fluent U French and Culture Blog, here are five great reasons (that are "clickable") for learning French over other languages:
- 1. French has secured its status as a top international language
- 2. Learning French gives you access to the world
- 3. French is on the rise
- 4. French is a favorite among language learners
- 5. For an English speaker, French has a great difficulty-to-benefit ratio

Summer 2022 Reading Bingo--Summer Reading Incentive sponsored by Media Center at Cherry Park Elementary!
This summer students are invited to play "Summer Reading Bingo!"
This is a fun way to keep up those good reading habits all summer long! Here's how students can play:
- Take home a "Summer Reading Bingo" card from school.
- Place it in a prominent place where you'll be reminded to mark your card!
- Complete the tasks on the card in any order.
- Have a parent or guardian mark the card with his or her initials once you complete a task.
- Get "BINGO" across, down, or diagonally for a small prize.
- Cover the entire board for a chance to win a "Back-to-School" prize pack including brand new books! A drawing will be held in late August.
- Claim your prize by returning the card to Mrs. Austin in the Media Center by Friday of the first week of school in August.
- The Bingo Card will be sent home during the last week of school and a copy of the card will be available under the Media Section of our schools' Website and it is linked below.
- Have a fun Reading Summer!!
Battle of the Books (Rising Fourth and Fifth Graders) The Rock Hill School District School Librarians are excited to announce that Battle of the Books is back! Battle of the Books is a fun club that introduces our 4 th and 5 th grade students to a variety of literature while at the same time allowing them to work with other students, improve reading skills, and enjoy the thrill of competition. Battle of the Books is perfect for students who love to read! During the 2022-2023 school year, all Rock Hill School District elementary schools will participate in Battle of the Books. Each school will develop teams of students who will compete for a school level Battle of the Books winner. The school winners will advance to a district level competition. To begin preparing students, we are providing a list of books that will be used for this program. We encourage students to begin reading these books this summer:
A Boy Called Bat
Escape from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library
Esperanza Rising
Hoot
A Million Ways Home
The Sisters Grimm (Book 1)
Serafina and the Black Cloak
Zane and the Hurricane
If your 4 th or 5 th grader is interested in participating in Battle of the Books, your reader can contact Dr. Austin, our Media Specialist, when school begins in August!
