One Man's Journey
Dear Cougar Family,
“A community is a group of people who agree to grow together.”
I discovered this Simon Sinek quote last summer as I was gathering resources for the Leadership Team Retreat. The admin team read his book Leaders Eat Last this summer, and some of you may remember references to Start with Why in staff development of years past. I was looking for a video clip of him speaking, and I found several great ones, but I ended up coming back to this simple statement: "A community is a group of people who agree to grow together." I love this definition of community, and it powerfully illustrates the type of community I want CSHS to be: one in which we rely on each other and push one another to be better.
I also spent some time last summer looking for things related to the "Great Texas Road Trip." This led me to realize that Texas Country Reporter has episodes available to view on YouTube, and I am not ashamed to admit that I spent a July afternoon watching a few episodes. One episode in particular touched my heart, and I periodically think about it: The Last Graduate.
From the title, one might infer he was the last in line or that he was the last person they thought would get to graduate, but Sherman Jones's journey to graduating from Spade High School is far more complex than that. Please take a moment to watch the video.
As you watch, think about all of those who were part of Sherman's journey. What relationships helped Sherman along the way? How does Sherman's community of Spade shape his journey?
Have a fabulous week! And, as always, COUGAR PRIDE!

School Spirit Contest During Advocate
Make sure you show the Fight Song and Alma Mater videos during Advocate so the students can learn them. For teachers new to our campus, our students sing the Alma Mater after every game. It is absolutely my favorite tradition we have!
Be creative and see how you can get kids to learn the words, so they are ready to go when we have our first pep rally.
Record your class creatively performing either the Alma Mater or the Fight Song and submit all entries to Mrs. Parkerson via email by Thursday, September 14. One class winner will be selected for each song to receive a pizza party. Winners will be shared via Twitter on Friday, September 15.
Content Mastery
Content Mastery & Credit Recovery have been combined this year due to staffing and space constraints. Please keep this in mind when you are sending students to CM.
Remember that ANY student is able to receive help in content mastery. Teachers can start sending students down to room 1048 after instruction (with a Content Mastery pass). Please send any supplemental aides or resources students may need to complete an assignment with them when they come along with a completed CM pass.
Questions? See/email Coach Walsh.
