Governor Calls for Drastic Cuts to Charter Schools

In her proposed budget, Governor Raimondo has called for a cut in funding of $355 for each and every Beacon and Founders student. With 321 students scheduled to attend next year, this would be a new reduction of $113,955 in our funding for 2016-2017. This is in addition to a cut in funding by RIDE two years ago that was never reported to any of the state's public charter schools. This additional $361 per student was given back to the students' sending districts. These combined cuts would have drastic implications on our budget for next year.

In addition to these cuts to our schools, the governor is recommending that districts losing a significant number of students to charters be given an additional $300 per student in state funding not to educate those children.

To put this into perspective... If one of our students, a Cumberland resident, chose to attend Beacon, Cumberland would receive an extra $1,016 not to educate that child. This includes the $361 reduction in funding in place now, the proposed $355 reduction in funding to charters in the governor's budget, as well as $300 from the state because Cumberland has a large number of students attending charters.
