Welcome to Math Night!
2nd to 3rd Grade Transition
Do these words make you nervous?
How is 3rd grade different than 2nd grade?
More independence
3rd graders are expected to be more independent in all areas: classroom routines, rules, social interactions, asking questions when needed AND in their work.
More abstract
Math especially becomes more abstract and less concrete in 3rd grade.
Reading comprehension
Reading comprehension affects math dramatically.
What are 3rd grade math problems like?
- Fewer pictures, more words
- Multi-steps
- Patterns are in tables
- Metric system
What can I do as a parent to prepare them for 3rd grade?
Foster independence
Allow them to try their homework on their own first, then check in to see if they're understanding.
Help them learn organizational skills.
Make sure they know they're math facts.
Knowing their math facts fluently will help them be able to concentrate on the math problem, not the math.
Make sure they keep reading this summer.
Make use of the summer reading program that the community library offers.
