A weekly update from Carleton Middle School
A few quotes from observations
Part of my job as principal of Carleton Middle School is to observe teachers and students in the classroom and track academic progress, engagement, and provide feedback. I wanted to take a few moments and share some quotes I heard (and recorded on the observation collection tool) this week to celebrate some of the great teaching and learning occurring within our classroom walls. I have removed students and teachers names and inserted "teacher" or "student" in their place. These are some great quotes from our teachers that consistently have our students' interests in the forefront of all that they accomplish.
"What do you think that block of information is telling you to do? How should you react?"
"Student, would you like to see your grades to see where you are at for the card marking?"
"Student, please move over here so you're not as distracted."
"Thank you for those that are engaged with their silent reading book."
"Remember, when using negative integers on the number line, you need to go backward."
"You've got the right answer, but tell me why."
"Why is the answer cubed and not squared? Can you explain that to the rest of the class?"
"Great, what's the next step? What do you need to do next?"
"Very good! See, you do understand. You are ready for the test next week."
"Next time, if you are unsure of what the question is asking on the test, go ahead and ask."
"A lot of you did amazing on this test question."
"This project is more about meeting the design constraints and criteria. So let that be your main focus."
"What questions do you have?"
"Is there anyone that wants to share their design or their plan for how to tackle this?"
"Let's everyone say that word together. Ready, 1, 2, 3..."
"Pass your self-evaluation rubrics up to the front of the class. That will prevent all of the shuffling during student presentations."
"What did you learn from those experiences?"
"The directions state, find the key words in the text and circle them. Did you circle them?"
"Keep going, good. You're right on track."
"That's not a good choice."
"Tell me where you are at in your learning? Tell me more."
"Why did you say that? Can you explain in further detail?"
"I appreciate you being here. You are such a great addition to our class."
"Thank you for being so resourceful and sharing your textbook with another student."
"I'd like to see those that are arriving a few moments after the bell to be more accountable for arriving to class on time."
