Parent Teacher Conferences

Last week your child brought home the appointment for your conference. Spring Conferences are student led. As your child will be leading the conference (I will be assisting), they are required to attend. Please contact the office if you need to change your scheduled appointment.

Valentine's Day Party

Last week your child took home a note from PTA requesting each family to send in $2-$5 rather than supplies for the party. Please be sure to send it to school in an envelope. Our room parents will use the funds to purchase what is needed for the party. I'm including a class list for students wishing to get a jump start on addressing their Valentine's.

This week our focus will be on figurative language and informational text. Students will complete their snow globe craftivity on figurative language which will be on display during conferences. We will be reading science texts to meet our informational text standards this quarter.

Almost all students have completed their text structure exploration magazines. Those not, will continue to have additional homework, as they will need to take it home to complete.

This week we formally begin our unit on writing a personal narrative. Last week students listened to the story, Nothing Ever Happens on 90th Street in which they learned a story can be found anywhere. We also discussed the difference between watermelon and seed moments. Our focus is on narrowing our story down to the seed level, which is one aspect of the story, rather than the whole story. I need to collect data on where students are at with this type of writing, so they will respond to a prompt first, and then we'll begin our mini-lessons. This unit will be different as we will be writing several smaller pieces, rather than a large project.

Our focus this week will be one more investigation on the conservation of matter where students will do more with designing and explaining how to do the investigation, as well as how to conduct multiple trials. Our practicum student, Mrs. Bendure, will be leading an investigation on chemical change and how it relates to heat. We will then move into applying our knowledge to help stop corrosion on the Statue of Liberty. I plan on an assessment over this topic next week.

This week we are moving into improper fractions, mixed numbers, and adding/subtracting mixed numbers. Below I've added a few more resources in which to help support your student.

Most days students will be able to finish their math practice in class. However, at home they could work on math facts, either through flashcards or In addition, spend ten to fifteen minutes on to practice our current concepts. If your child has mastered the ones for Numbers Base Ten, then move on to geometry as this is often one that interests students and one they can accomplish independently. Any time your child is requesting more math opportunities, direct them to this site. They are familiar with it.
