AN AFTERNOON AT THE HOME OF JUSTICE JOHN McKINLEY

John McKinley, the first person from Alabama to serve as a Justice on the United States Supreme Court and the man for whom our City’s beautiful Post Office building is named, had what was described as a very beautiful home just behind the present-day Hampton Hotel in downtown Florence. There were only a few structures near the home at that time, so the McKinley family enjoyed a practically unimpeded view of the mighty Tennessee River. Anne Royall, the brave (or foolhardy) journalist from Georgia who traveled alone to visit towns on the frontier, described thusly a portion of an afternoon she spent at the McKinley home in 1820: “The dwelling contains more taste and splendor, by one-half, that I ever saw in my whole life put together. But this is nothing. Mrs. McKinley, the elegance of her manners and the sweetness of her conversation, joined with her interesting children, completely disconcerted me. Everything in the house had, to me, the appearance of enchantment. I never was in such a paradise before. Mrs. McKinley looked as though she had dropped from above. I never was more confounded. And the children were the handsomest I had ever seen. I was so completely fascinated by their manners.” [Yes, Anne Royall’s writing often tilted toward the hyperbolic, but it is always interesting, nonetheless, as it gives the modern-day reader a glimpse into frontier Florence.]
