January 2022 Newsletter

St. Vital Catholic School

Happy New Year!

Welcome 2022! Hope everyone had a restful and healthy Christmas Holiday and are ready to return to school. Looking forward to seeing everyone again and to hear about their Christmas adventures.

We are happy to continue to learn together at school and will continue to work hard at doing our best to be safe. Rapid test kits are still available at the school. If you are wanting a kit please contact your classroom teacher or the office and we can send one home with your child. If your child is not feeling well keep them at home. We encourage sharing, just not colds. We want them, their classmates and staff to be healthy. Mask use is still mandatory and need to be worn properly. After a 2 week break from them it is a good idea to review with your child how to wear them. With the cold weather masks get damp and need replacing throughout the day. Please be sure to send extra masks to school to help your child out with this.

The weather outside can be frightful as the mercury in the thermometer starts to dip down below -20°C. Please be sure that your child leaves the house with warm winter wear so they are able to enjoy the great outdoors.

There are a lot of activities happening this month and are outlined below. If you have any questions about any of them please do not hesitate to connect with your child's teacher or the school. We are happy to help out.

God Bless,

Mrs. Nichol

This Month at St. Vital Catholic School

School Community Council

Thank you to all of our families and their contribution to our fundraisers. We met our goal of selling $5000 Co-op Gift Cards, raising $500 for the SCC. More Co-op gift cards will be available for sale later this year. A total of 359 coupons for Family Pizza were sold to St. Vital families and friends! This amounted to a profit of $1,795 ! Please send us a photo of your family eating their pizza. There will be a draw made for a Free Pizza for those families who send in a photo.

To promote writing in our school and a way to spread Christmas cheer, the SCC invited the students to send a Season's Greeting in the form of letters, cards or art to the residents of Battlefords District Care Centre. They were picked up and delivered just before the Christmas break.

Next meeting Date: January 12 at 7:00pm. This meeting will be virtual. All are welcome to join the Zoom meeting.

Learn to Ski & School Ski Day

We have been fortunate to have our Grade 5 students participate in the Learn to Ski Program at Table Mountain in December and this month Table Mountain has extended the same program to our Grade 6 students who missed out last year due to COVID. The Grade 6 students' date has been changed to Monday, January 10th and Tuesday, January 11th. Students will come to school as regularly scheduled, bussed to Table Mountain Regional Park, and bussed back to St. Vital School before 3:30 p.m. to catch their bus home. They will need to bring their own lunch, snacks, drinks, etc. for the day. We are praying for fresh snow and warmer weather. Payment and waiver forms are due into the office by Friday, January 7th.

St. Vital School will be sending students in Grades 4-7 to Table Mountain for a fun day of downhill skiing Thursday, January 20th. A note will be sent home outlining items to bring, a waiver form, and fees needing to be paid.

Sacramental Preparations

Our Grade 2 students will be embarking on their journey in becoming initiated into the Catholic faith through the Sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation. There will be a meeting for parents at St. Vital Church, Tuesday, January 18th at 7:00pm where Father Sebastian and the teachers will review what the school and parents can do to help their child prepare for this blessed event. The Enrollment Mass will be Sunday, February 6th at the 10:30 mass.

His Excellency, Bishop Stephen, will be visiting the students on May 11th and the students will have their Confirmation on Sunday, May 15th at 10:30.

If there are families who are wanting their child baptized or whose child may have missed receiving the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Holy Communion and Confirmation contact the school and we can help support you in connecting with the church.

Literacy Week

This year literacy weeks takes place the week of January 24th to 28th, with Family Literacy Day taking place every January 27. The intent of Literacy Week is to raise awareness about the importance of reading and engaging in other literacy-related activities as a school and a family. Since 1999, thousands of schools, libraries, literacy organizations and other community groups have taken part in the initiative. Taking time every day to read or do a learning activity with children is crucial to a child’s development, improving a child’s literacy skills dramatically, and can help a parent improve their skills as well.

'ABC Life Literacy Canada'

This year the school, the Student Leadership Club, and the School Community Council will be working together to plan a variety of activities to promote the love of ready and celebrating our young writers. A separate newsletter/note will be sent home highlighting the various activities that will be occurring this week and how you can promote reading in your home.

Student Leadership Club
