What is cooperative learning?

Cooperative learning is an instructional classroom strategy for promote student learning. Students systematically work together, in specific roles, within groups of 2-4 to achieve a shared goal. This strategy promotes collaboration, group processing, and interpersonal skill which have a positive effect on learning.

Possible Grouping Roles

  • Leader/Facilitator
  • Time Keeper
  • Recorder
  • Presenter
  • Encourager
  • Organizer/Checker

Grouping Criteria

  • Formal: Designed to complete an activity that may last over several days
  • Informal: Ad hoc groups that may last a few minutes or a class period
  • Base : long term groups up to a marking period
