What is cooperative learning?
Cooperative learning is an instructional classroom strategy for promote student learning. Students systematically work together, in specific roles, within groups of 2-4 to achieve a shared goal. This strategy promotes collaboration, group processing, and interpersonal skill which have a positive effect on learning.

Avoid ability grouping
DO use consistently
Once a week.
Possible Grouping Roles
- Leader/Facilitator
- Time Keeper
- Recorder
- Presenter
- Encourager
- Organizer/Checker
Grouping Criteria
- Formal: Designed to complete an activity that may last over several days
- Informal: Ad hoc groups that may last a few minutes or a class period
- Base : long term groups up to a marking period
