Communication
On a similar theme, I wanted to communicate with our parents about a growing problem facing our schools: vaping. If you have not heard about vaping it is a small electronic device that produces a vapor for inhalation. Many people (and students) believe this to be harmless. Unfortunately, this is not true. There are few long term studies on vaping but some recent reports have indicated it can be addictive and potentially lead to cigarette use. Vaping devices do contain tobacco and we know the negative effects it can have on anyone, let alone children. Here is a link for a recent article from the New York Times: https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/23/health/e-cigarettes-health-evidence.html
I share this information with you because we have seen an increase in use among our students here at CMS. Students have been seen using on the bus, at the bus stop, and even in a bathroom. It is incredibly hard to catch as the devices look similar to a thumbdrive, make no noise, and only smell for a moment - often with a fruit smell. We will be taking several steps to educate our students about the dangers in vaping and our staff on what to look for. The consequence for getting caught with a vaping device is the same as tobacco or other drug paraphernalia as they are not allowed on school property. I would encourage you to talk to your students about this practice and it's harmful affects.
Thank You!
