6th graders had fun started off the week with a typing racing competition. They also completed a mini-unit on MAC Shortcuts. Their typing words per minute goal will remain at 13 with 90% accuracy for one more week. While some students have already met grade level goals, all students should practice to improve their skills. Students were instructed if they did not meet their minimum goal that they should practice at home. They may practice anytime at typingtraining.com. Students can even use their Chromebooks to practice anywhere they have an Internet connection. They all have their login information. If you have any issues logging on at home, please email me. You can monitor your child's progress at home and school by going to the reports menu after they have logged into Typing Training. Many computer students email to ask login information or for me to assign specific assignments on typingtraining.com. I welcome these emails and respond as soon as possible.

STELLAR CONCERT LAST WEEK!!!! We are so proud of every single one of you!
6th Grade Band: In 6th grade band we are now splitting out into sections weekly. Every section will get a day of the week with one of the directors to help with more in depth fundamentals of their instrument. When the students are not in a sectional they will be working through the book on their own. Please encourage your students to access the resources that are posted on google classroom for their sections and to practice out of the book at home.
7th Grade Band: 7th grade band is beginning a unit on scales. We are also beginning work in a new book, Foundation for Superior Performance. We have a classroom set so students do not need to buy a new book, but if they would like to purchase a book you can contact one of us and we will get you all of the information that you are going to need. Students will split our into sections and work through the new book with the assigned scales in class. This will help to build a strong foundation of tone and technique. Some 7th graders are working on solos for Central Methodist University Music Festival in March. These kiddos will have lesson with a director during class. Please encourage your students to practice these art home as well.
8th Grade Band: 8th grade had a stellar performance at the concert this past week and I am could not be more impressed with these young people. Keep up the great work kiddos. We have begun working on new music for contest in March. These pieces are more challenging and will require diligent practice on the student part. Please encourage your students to practice at home. Students have also signed up for solos and small ensembles for contest in March. A schedule of lessons has been posted on google classroom and will be emailed home by the end of the week.
Wire Choir: We are working on chord progressions from memory and earning rewards for learning standard notation.
As always if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact us via email at sblandford@fulton58.org or kneudecker@fulton58.org. You can also call the high school band office at 573-590-8135.

HARMONY HORNETS:
We are so proud of this group showcasing what they had been so diligently working on every Tuesday! Our amazing group is made up of a mixture of 6th-8th grade (7th/8th band or guitar members) and has great energy and interest in making great music. Rehearsals are every Tuesday from 3:20 - 4:15 in the FMS choir room (G07).
A new semester is here and therefore new students are accepted for Harmony Hornets at our first 2017 rehearsal on Tuesday, Jan. 10th. A form will need to be picked up from the choir room, completed, and brought with you. Hope to see you there!
If you ever have any questions, concerns, or comments, feel free to contact me at llehman@fulton58.org.
HORNET PRIDE:
Congratulations on a wonderful performance at our concert! Your energy and enthusiasm made it a fun performance. Pictures of all choirs may be found below!
We are already laying the groundwork for our contest repertoire. We will be singing two selections at Central Methodist University's music festival on Friday, March 3rd. I'm looking forward to learning this music, and sharing it with a larger audience!
PLEASE REMEMBER that choir members MUST be in uniform at ALL of our performances this year. You may purchase the required polo shirt by bring $13 ($15 for XL) to Dr. Moebes. You will receive a receipt for your payment.
ARTS ALIVE:
Our practice and study of rhythm is progressing nicely. We have taken a pretest to see how much we remember from previous music classes, and how much we need to review. Students are practicing and reviewing these skills by doing written activities, and by "on their feet" activities. They have been trying out their choreography skills this week to practice putting rhythm into physical action!
We have also started a unit called "Music Makes the Scene!" This is our daily warm-up activity, during which we watch a short video clip that has music assigned to it. Students describe how the music affects what they think, feel, and notice about the associated video. This gives us the opportunity to listen to a variety of styles of music: rock, symphonic, and ethnic music and instruments from around the world, for example. Later in the quarter, we will try our hands at creating our OWN video/audio mash-ups!

FMS Guidance: Mrs. Garner & Mrs. Horstmeier
January is going to be a fun and busy month here at FMS!! We have many opportunities for Career Exploration coming up.
This week, 8th Graders will take a Career Interest Inventory through Missouri Connections. This inventory will take their responses concerning personal interests and skills to determine what career paths would be a good fit based on their responses. Students will then have the opportunity to research a variety of careers. Next, 8th Graders will take a Reality Check Inventory that allows them to determine how much money they think they will spend on bills, entertainment, clothes, etc. in the future. The Reality Check then gives students an annual income figure they would need to earn in order to support that lifestyle. Your student will have access to the results of these inventories through the Missouri Connections website.
On January 27th we will host our 2nd Annual "Stepping Up to Success" for the 8th graders. This program offers a line up of speakers from a variety of career fields as well as representatives from the High School to speak about clubs and sports. Our speakers this year come from careers in the areas of: education, coaching, cosmetology, social work, law enforcement, military, nuclear medicine, vocational careers, Dollar General, juvenile court, and professional singing. FMS appreciates these community members taking time out of their day to share their knowledge and experiences with our students. 8th Graders will be able to submit their top choices for speakers in the coming week.
6th and 7th graders will also have an opportunity to take a Career Interest Inventory in the coming weeks. We can't wait to see the results!
