Academy of Biomedical Science and HOSA
Hi, We are three seniors attending Scituate High School, looking to fundraise for Stroke victims. We have chosen the Stroke Support Association to empower stroke survivors and their families with resources to recover, reclaim, and rebuild their lives. We have competed in Medical Innovations for the past two years designing a prototype to help stroke victims regain their hand function, now we have ventured on to Community Awareness, spreading information and awareness to and about stroke victims so their stories can be heard. Please help us in providing these victims with a little extra help! Every dollar counts! You can donate through the link attached. If you are unable to donate, please help us share the message.

SHS Holiday Shop!
This is the third year Mrs. Morton's Working with Children class has collaborated with Middle School Special Education students and Dr. Murtagh, the school speech pathologist. They work on developing merchandise and organizing sales during the holiday. The proceeds refund the project with extra for an annual field trip in the Spring. These future high school students are considering careers working with children and our MS students enjoy their guidance and support. We hope you will participate in this holiday sale and support them in their goals.

Ms. Fochler's Algebra III with Trig class used M&Ms to investigate the relationship between degrees and radians for angles in the coordinate plane.
From Science
S in STEAM
In addition to generating acid rain, human activity also sometimes results in accidents like oil spills which also negatively impact the living and nonliving components of a habitat. S in STEAM students are investigating the effects of oil on bird feathers and testing methods of removing the oil in order to return the birds to the wild.
Academy of Biomedical Science
Additionally, Human Body System students sketched the lobes of the brain and control centers on swim caps and wore them around school showcasing their work.
Students enrolled in Human Body Systems (BioMed Pathway) have begun investigating the anatomy and physiology of the nervous system and its control over the muscular system. By installing the lobes of the brain and the spinal cord, these Maniken models illustrate the location of these important areas and define a list of associated behaviors linked to each one.
HOSA Leads a Successful Blood Drive
On Thursday December 7th, Scituate High School hosted a blood drive with the Rhode Island Blood Center. Over the course of the day 20 donors gave blood. Since 1 donation can help 3 people, as many as 60 individuals will be helped or saved!
Academy of Engineering
Introduction to Engineering Design:
This week students applied their training in spreadsheets to learn two tools used in the engineering design process: the decision matrix, and the Gantt chart. First, we used spreadsheets to learn about decision matrices. This is a spreadsheet used to make the complex decision of "which option is best" simplified by repeatedly asking "how would you rate this one option by this one criterion." Students then used actual data to show why different engines make sense on different vehicles. Then we learned about Gantt charts, a tool used to coordinate a process that requires many efforts by many different people. This was exemplified by making a Gantt chart of the efforts of everybody involved with a supermarket checkout. Seen below are picturesque examples by Aiden Ouilette and Richard Bond.
Computer Integrated Manufacturing
Students in Computer Integrated Manufacturing are currently cycling through stations training them on many different manufacturing techniques. For each station, students go through an academic phase where they watch a pre-recorded video demonstration and take a safety and technique quiz. This can be done repeatedly but must achieve a score of 100%. When ready, students will move to the practicum of that station where they are given technical drawings for something made using the technique in question. Featured this week, we see two different types of soldering. In the first photo, we see Bryant Machowski, Paul Zolkos, and Michael Correia doing electronics soldering by attaching components to a silicon board, then splicing two wires together and waterproofing them with shrink tubing. In the second photo, we see Grant Bailey and Joe Almonte practicing plumbers' work by pipe soldering different types of copper connectors to make a strange 3D shape, then we see if it holds water.
Civil Engineering and Architecture
This week students completed putting the walls up on a seven-story mixed-use retail center, gymnastics gym, garage, and apartment complex. With over 200 apartments, 400 parking spots, dozens of other purpose-built rooms, and the rooms that all buildings require (utilities, bathrooms, stairs, hallways), fitting it all together was expected to be the biggest challenge yet. Seen below is Simona Mancini's 7th floor, the gallery for the gymnasium on the floor below, 41 two-bedroom apartments, and the open-air commons between the apartments.

After School Academic Support at SHS
Scituate High School is hosting an After School Academic Support Center for ELA and Math beginning next week. Ms. Antonelli will stay after school for ELA each Tuesday beginning October 17th, and Mr. Soucar will be available for Math each Thursday beginning October 19th. Sessions will run from 2:20-3:20, and late buses will be available. During this time students can get extra support while completing class assignments and homework. We hope students will take advantage of this opportunity to get the additional time or help they need to be successful!
If you have any questions, please feel free to reach out to Ms. Goffe at 647-4120 ext. 1033.
