Graduate Instructions
Graduates will report to the field house appropriately dressed for the ceremony no later than 6 pm. For the ceremony, graduates will be seated on the football field.
In the field house, chairs will be in the same arrangement as they will be on the football field.
Staff will take attendance and check that each student is complying with the graduation dress code.
All graduates are expected to wear the traditional cap and gown (no decorations) with appropriate attire under the cap and gown. Examples include: dress shirt, tie, slacks, dresses, skirts, and blouses, are all appropriate for a formal ceremony. No shorts, cut-offs, tennis shoes, or flip flops.
No shoes with a separated heel, like high-heeled shoes, are permitted in order to protect the turf field.
Students may also wear other school-sponsored embellishments at graduation such as the maroon and gold honor cord, 5% medal, IB stole, military honor cord, academic ring, or state championship ring. Please ask an administrator if your student has any questions about attire.
Seniors who do not comply with these standards and/or who dress in a way that could potentially disrupt the ceremony will be asked to change or not participate. The ceremony will not be delayed for the student to return from home in order to change clothes.
During the ceremony, as the graduate's name is read over the PA, the student will walk to the stage to be greeted by the principal. As the graduate walks across the stage a central office administrator or school board member will give each graduate their diploma cover which will be used in a professional photograph. The graduate will pause as they exit the stage for a photograph with the photographer.
All seniors should immediately report to the cafeteria immediately after the ceremony to pick up their diploma.

The academic ring is an honor bestowed upon senior students at Chesterton High School who have met a rigid set of academic and co-curricular criteria. The ring resulted from a year of study by a faculty, parent and student committee. The idea of the ring was to recognize outstanding achievement by CHS students and to acknowledge their "renaissance" education.
The criterion for the ring is based on a 15-point scale. In order to earn the ring a student must accumulate 14 points or more and earn a cumulative 4.3 GPA by the 7th semester. It is the committee's desire to recognize as many students as possible; however, the academic ring is intended to promote a totally well rounded student who has met a high level of academic criteria.
Points for the academic ring are determined as follows:
1 point for every semester on Principal's Honor Roll (7 points possible)
1 point for National Honor Society membership
1 point for co-curricular participation each year (4 points possible)
1 point for 40 credits earned at seventh semester
1 point for no grade below a "B" (seven semesters)
1 point for earning a 4.3 grade point average for all seven semesters
