Mrs. Walters' News
This week we celebrated our 100th day of school! Our students are 100 days smarter and are proving that they are hard workers with kind spirits. I am proud of how far they have come!
Today was our 'Silly Sock Day' monthly celebration for classes that are practicing their Bear Necessities. See some fun pictures below that captured our awesome feet!
Our school is participating in the Kids Heart Challenge fundraising for the American Heart Association! Please consider donating to this important organization. Your child should have come home with a flier with information about how to donate, both conventionally or online!
You may not know, but our teachers continually monitor reading levels of our students. They use a lettered system to indicate their progress and the letters are matched to an appropriate letter band of books for each child to read based on their literacy skills. There are several different systems used on the market which can be confusing for parents when their children bring books home to read. Our teachers use the Fontas & Pinnell letter scale which can be calibrated to other systems like AR, LLI, Scholastic, etc.
Another thing that can be confusing is which books a child can read independently versus which books are at an 'instructional' level for school. Our teachers are using books with your students in the classroom that are just out of reach to keep building upon the skills that have already been mastered. In short, the books coming home in book bags should be at an independent level and your child should be able to read them fairly fluently. If you ever have any questions about your child's progress, don't hesitate to reach out to me or your child's teacher!
Finally, our PTO is running a supply drive to help keep classrooms well stocked for the rest of the year. See the PTO notes below to see what is needed for Bushnell and details about dropping things off. Thanks in advance for your generosity.
