GUIDANCE HAS YOUR BACK!
A MESSAGE FROM NATASHA KHAN, DIRECTOR OF GUIDANCE K-12
The month of September was a very exciting and busy time of the year. The counseling staff at HHS was actively involved in a variety of programs to assist students and families in the transition back to school.
On September 3 and 4, 2020, the school counselors took part in the orientation program for freshmen and seniors, respectively. A full day of events was presented to the students to share pertinent information. Freshmen met their high school counselors, social workers, and school psychologists, to learn about their role and how they play an integral part in a student's life. Seniors met with their school counselors to address deadlines and specific concerns surrounding the college application process. Seniors heard from the social workers and school psychologists, on how to practice self-care and wellness. A virtual presentation from LICADD, hosted by Mrs. Nicole Cestari discussed the ways students can identify various stressors and learn how to address them.
On September 14, 2020, the Herricks Counseling and Wellness Center held a virtual 12th Grade Parent and Student Information Night. The event was well attended and participants walked away knowing more about the college application process. Director of Guidance, Natasha Khan shared some insights regarding the graduating class of 2020. Families then joined their assigned school counselors in individual breakout sessions to focus more on the specifics related to applying to colleges right now. Over the next month, the Counseling Center will post a step-by-step college application video for students to access.
On September 23, 2020, HHS hosted a weekday SAT exam for our students. Over 100 students registered for the exam. Offering students the opportunity to take this standardized test, in the comfort and safety of their high school, helped ease their concerns about highlighting their strongest profile for college applications.
Additionally, on September 23, 2020, the Counseling and Wellness Center presented a virtual Financial Aid Night, in collaboration with Adelphi University. One hundred and thirty families attended and participated by asking questions through the virtual platform. Further information regarding financial aid can be found on the Counseling Center website.
On September 30, 2020, Tom Ehlers, the President, and Founder, from Method Test Prep provided our community with an information session on accessing resources available to our students for test preparation in relation to the SAT/ACT.
All information can be found on the Herricks Counseling and Wellness Center website where you can find information about clubs and activities, AP exams, standardized testing, college-related information, self-care, wellness, and much more! Please visit often for updates!
A MESSAGE FROM THE HEALTH OFFICE
Getting a flu vaccine is more important than ever during 2020-2021 to protect yourself and the people around you from flu, and to help reduce the strain on healthcare systems responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.
CDC and our School Physician recommends that people get a flu vaccine by the end of October but you may receive it anytime during the fall and winter. Please consult your family medical provider about receiving the flu vaccine.
The school nurse at your child’s school will contact you if your child becomes ill while in school. It is advisable to consider consulting your private physician if your child has any of the following symptoms:
Elevated temperature
Reddened or discharging eyes
Nausea or vomiting
Enlarged glands
Skin eruptions/rash
Ear ache
Diarrhea
Dizziness
Coughing
Sore throat
It is recommended that if a Flu or Strep test is deemed necessary by your doctor, a COVID test should be obtained as symptoms of both illnesses are very similar.
If your child becomes ill at school, it is the parent /guardian’s responsibility to arrange transportation for his or her ill child. The child will be released only to those individuals listed on the emergency cards.
When returning to school after an illness, the child should:
Have a doctor’s note that contains information regarding the illness.
Be fever free for the past 24 hours without medications (ie. Tylenol or Motrin).
Be free of vomiting or diarrhea for the past 24 hours.
If an antibiotic has been prescribed, the child must have received a full 24 hour dose of medication prior to returning to school.
Adhering to these guidelines will promote a healthy school environment for everyone in the Herricks community. More information can be found here on our website. Feel free to contact the school nurse in your child’s school if you have any questions or concerns.
Thank you,
The Herricks School Nurses
