SBAC TESTNG BEGINS APRIL 30th
April 30th - May 17th State Testing
All 3-5th grade students, except those who have applied for waivers, will be taking the state tests during this time period. These tests are important on many levels. We ask EVERYONE in our community to support our hard working test takers by doing the following:
**ALL STUDENTS (K-5TH) SHOULD ARRIVE TO SCHOOL NO LATER THAN 8:08AM. CHILDREN WHO ARRIVE LATE WILL NOT BE ABLE TO ENTER THEIR CLASSROOM AND WILL HAVE TO DO A MAKE-UP TEST.
**FROM 8:10-9:55AM THE SCHOOL WILL BE ON SILENT MODE. NO ONE SHOULD BE IN THE HALLS OR PLAYGROUND. WE NEED A QUIET AND CALM TESTING ENVIRONMENT.
Additionally, parents of 3rd-5th graders should follow the additional guidelines below:
1. Help your children to get to bed on time.
2. Ensure your children eat a protein rich breakfast.
3. Keep your morning routines with your kiddos as calm as possible. This will enable your kiddos to start their day calm and centered and ready to tackle the state tests.
Thank you so VERY much for your support!
WELLNESS DAY - THURSDAY, MAY 2ND
ORION STATEMENT OF UNDERSTANDING
The document describes our Orion Alternative School Program, the importance of our Voluntary Parent Participation Hours, the logistics of our Voluntary Parent Participation Hours and a description of and a consent to enroll in our Alternative School Program.
In addition, as part of our new Voluntary Participation Guidelines, we will no longer be tracking volunteer hours, so there is no need to turn in hours sheets for the remainder of this year. However, THE FOUNDATION OF ORION'S SUCCESS IS THE COLLECTIVE VOLUNTARY PARTICIPATION OF FAMILIES. To keep this foundation strong, we request that families volunteer 72 hours per year.
This new document was distributed to everyone a few weeks ago in our Friday's Folder. If you need a new one, please see Liz in the office. Please read our New Statement of Understanding, sign it and return it to school by Friday, May 3rd.
THIS IS FOR OUR CURRENT SCHOOL YEAR: 2018-2019. A NEW FORM WILL NEED TO BE COMPLETED IN AUGUST FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR.
TRANSITION UPDATE
The transition of the Orion Alternative Parent Participation Program to the Gill campus for the 2019-2020 school year is underway. Principal Rivera, myself, District Leaders and Parent Leaders form both school sites will be working together to provide a smooth transition for both the Gill and Orion communities. There is much to be done but thankfully we have time do it! As always, I will keep you all updated on our progress.
On April 11th, the Gill/Orion Transition Team held its fourth and final meeting . At this meeting, decisions were made to dissolve the Gill PTA and to retain the Orion PTO as the guiding parent organization on the Gill campus next year. A decision was also made to form the new Gill SSC by retaining half of the members from each of the current Gill and Orion SCC's. Dr. Baker will send out an email to both communities detailing the notes from the meeting.
On April 12th, Principal Rivera led a prospective Kinder tour on the Orion site. After the tour, she was able to spend a little time getting to talk with some of our current parents. She appreciated the opportunity to learn even more about what makes Orion so special!
On April 18th, our very own LIBRARIAN CRISTINA learned the wonderful news that she will move with Orion Alternative and become the Librarian on the John Gill campus! This is simply fantastic news that I know will fill the hearts of all in our community!!
On April 18th, Principal Rivera hosted a Meet and Greet for the Gill and Orion teachers. The staff enjoyed getting to know one another and our looking forward to a working and learning together next year!
On April 25th - The John Gill community hosted a STEAM Fair for both the Gill and Orion communities. Both communities enjoyed the opportunity to spend some time engineering together! A HUGE thank you to Principal Rivera and the Gill community for hosting such a fun community building event!
Please note the following important next steps in the transition process:
1) May 31st - The John Gill community will host a Field Day for our current Kinder - 5th Graders (Time and Logistics: TBD). This will a wonderful opportunity for our kiddos to spend some time together before the beginning of next year.
