Pajama Day and Gingerbread Houses Friday

Students can wear their pajamas on Friday. They can wear slippers in the classroom but need to bring other shoes for walking around the school and for recess. We will build gingerbread houses in the morning. If you have some building and decorating materials, please send them in by Thursday so I can see what else we might need. We still need graham crackers, icing and more decorative items.

Festival of Lights

Students have been learning about other winter celebrations. They are making artifacts and facts cards for each celebration so they can share what they learned with their families. We were lucky to have Bella (Tafari's mom) and Ellie (Gabriella's mom) come and teach us about Kwanzaa and Hanukkah. We have also had some good discussions about why it is important to learn about other cultures and traditions.

Snack Sign-up for Remainder of Year

Thank you for providing snacks for our class. By 9:00, the students are feeling a little hungry and having a light, healthy snack helps us get through the morning. I have attached the snack schedule for the remainder of the year, as there are many gaps past winter break. If you would like to sign up for another week, please follow the link below. I realized that I had not actually shared the document with everyone, but I have fixed it and you should be able to access it now.

Winter Program

This year, the annual holiday program will be held this Tuesday at Asheville High School at 6:00. Students need to be ready to line up by 5:45. If you come to the main entrance at the high school (facing McDowell Street), there will be sign in the lobby showing students which hall they will be lining up in. Students in second grade will be playing snowflakes and need to wear blue and white.

Library Books

Our class has greatly enjoyed going to the library twice a month. We go often enough that students are very familiar with the arrangement of the library and the procedures. They say we are the best class and that our students are good citizens because they are helpful to one another when picking out books. I appreciate the parents who volunteer to walk with us so that we can make going to Pack Library part of our monthly routines. Because of winter break, the books will be due before we return to school. Monday, the librarians will make a detailed list of checked-out materials for each student so we can gather the books at the end of the week and return them over the weekend. (If a parent wants to volunteer to do this, that would be awesome!) If students have library books at home, please make sure they are sent back to school this week so they can be returned on time. Students will not have a chance to renew them before they are due.

Hour of Code

Students greatly enjoyed their Hour of Code. More than 70 million students from around the world did an hour of code this week. It was a great exercise in learning from mistakes and working hard on something until you get it right. Students can access the program we used at school to show you what it is all about or get more practice.
