Principal's Message
I spoke with Principal Gilford today–he is looking and feeling very good and plans to be back in December. That means my time at ISB will be coming to an end in the next couple of weeks and I want to make sure you know how much I appreciate you and your children. I have attended Open Houses for potential future students and I can see the level of desire many families have for their children to attend our school. The band concert on November 8 and the choir concert on November 17 were displays of talent I was not able to observe when I was here in 2021 as there was no in-person instruction and no concerts were being held during COVID. It is also wonderful to see the ongoing level of support from FRISB that is so much appreciated by staff and students.
We recognize the long lasting impact of the pandemic on our students–on their academic learning as well as their social/emotional skills–and we continue to provide a network of resources to support them. Staff and students demonstrate every day how important it is to be part of a strong learning community intent on living up to the ideals of our ISB mission:
Our goal at ISB is to encourage students to learn through an international lens as thoughtful, compassionate world citizens. We actively embrace intellectual rigor, intercultural respect, service to our local and world communities, and the promise of a peaceful world.
Best wishes to all as we continue through the 2022-2023 school year.
Sincerely,
Janice Adams

Culture Week Speakers Needed!
Do you have a hobby, interest, or unique experience you would like to share with others? We would be honored to have you as a volunteer speaker during ISB Culture Week in February 2023!
Every year, ISB hosts Culture Week, a week of culturally and internationally centered activities organized by staff and parent volunteers. This annual tradition epitomizes what ISB is all about and we are looking forward to another great event in 2023!
Some of the most impactful activities are our Culture Week workshops. These will be held in two sessions each on February 8 & 9, 2023 between 7:55 a.m. and 9:20 a.m. The workshops are led by community members, parents, and students and cover a wide variety of topics. Workshops may be offered separately to middle or high school students, or to all-age groups, and include demonstrations, performances, discussions, and active sessions. In the past, some parents have presented family histories, shared information about their current or past occupations, or conducted workshops on languages, foods, or customs unique to their cultures. The more interactive the better!
We would love to hear from you if you are interested and able to host a workshop! If so, please fill out this form to tell us a bit about yourself and to give us a description of the topic you plan to present.
If you have any questions about Culture Week, please reach out to our Community Service and International Projects Coordinator, Rory Williamson, at rory_williamson@beaverton.k12.or.us.
Thank you in advance for your support and interest!

Dragons in the Spotlight
Natalie Tedd, ISB sophomore, will be performing in The Portland Ballet's production of The Enchanted Toyshop on Thanksgiving weekend.
The magic begins when two children are left behind in a toyshop, and the Blue Fairy brings to life a parade of dancing dolls to entertain the guests. Choreographed specifically for the world-class academy by John Clifford, Toyshop showcases various skill levels and international dance styles. Pinocchio, playing cards and poodles are all part of the fast-paced fun. Since its premiere in 2003, Toyshop has become TPB's signature showpiece.
Four concerts will be performed on Thanksgiving weekend at Lincoln Performance Hall, at 1 and 4 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 26-27. Tickets start at $10. More information at theportlandballet.org or 503-452-8448 ext. 106.
Every year, the Willamette Week awards the Skidmore Prize to four young Portlanders who work to make Portland a better place, and this year we are so proud of our very own Itzel Chávez Gómez (2013 ISB graduate) who was awarded the prize.
Itzel is the Chicas College and Career Coordinator at Adelante Mujeres where she supports young Latina/e women along their journey through college. “Itzel gives students the permission to picture what their future could look like and to dream big,” says Carmen Walsh, a fellow Chicas staff member. “What a gift.”
Itzel pioneered the Chicas In College Program at Adelante Mujeres, which now serves over 90 Latina/e college students, and she developed the Chicas Emergency Grant that covers college-related expenses such as tuition, books, housing, meals, and transportation.
“It’s hard to understand what college really is, especially when you don’t have family who has done it before,” says Itzel. But Itzel is changing that for participants in the Chicas in College Program. Through 1-on-1 mentorship and virtual workshops, Itzel makes sure each person has the support and resources they need to thrive in college.
Felicidades, Itzel! We couldn't be more proud of the work you are doing to empower Latina/e college students.

Lantern Festivals (Thailand) - November 7 – 9, 2022
The lantern festivals of Thailand occur on the full-moon day each November. Throughout the country, thousands of lotus-shaped baskets holding candles and flowers are set to float on the rivers at night during the Loy Krathong Festival. In northern Thailand, the Yi Peng Festival sends clouds of lanterns into the night sky.
The festivals have their roots in several different religious and cultural traditions. Some believe that the sky lanterns release negative energy and may bring good luck in the coming year. The timing also marks the end of the rainy season and welcomes the cooler weather. The river lanterns are often set to float in order to give thanks to the Goddess of Water and the ceremony symbolizes letting go of past mistakes and negative thoughts. The festivals in themselves are a beautiful sight for participants and spectators alike.
