Literature is usually defined as....
"any kind of organized human expression, from ballet to advertising which can be read"
"writing which claim to consideration on the ground of beauty of form or emotional effect'
or
"writings in which expression and form, in connection with ideas of permanent and universal interest, are characteristic or essential features, as poetry, novels, history, biography, and essays."
Literature is the pinnacle of displaying beauty, intellect, and emotion.
Literature effects people in many ways, and literature speaks in different ways.
"It is in literature that the concrete outlook of humanity receives its expression." ~Alfred North Whitehead
"To provoke dreams of terror in the slumber of prosperity has become the moral duty of literature." ~Ernst Fischer
"Literature always anticipates life. It does not copy it, but moulds it to its purpose." ~Oscar Wilde
"Literature is where I go to explore the highest and lowest places in human society and in the human spirit, where I hope to find not absolute truth but the truth of the tale, of the imagination and of the heart." ~Salman Rushdie
The preceding quotes display how literature is expressed in numerous way in which numerous emotion are evoked ranging from happy to terror.
What is the need of literature?

Literature should and does instruct as well as entertain. ~Unknown
