Hello from the principal's desk!

Hello RBE community!
Believe it or not, we are already getting started thinking about enrolling our new Transitional Kindergartners and Kindergartners for NEXT year! Look on our website HERE for more info and for important dates.
Friday is Winter Craft Night, a bunch of PTA folks (led by the fabulous Christina Fine) have put in a LOT of work. It is going to be super fun and crafty! See flyer below.
I hope you had GREAT conferences last week! Your teachers stayed extra late, and worked extra hard to make sure they met with as many families as possible. I hope you got all of your questions answered and learned some ways that you can help your student(s) do even better in their classes.
One way many of us can do better is by having our kids come to school more often. As of today, 18% (94 students) of our school is considered habitually absent from school, meaning they have missed more than 10% of the days of school. We have been in school for 67 days. Anyone who has missed 7 or more days is considered habitually absent. It turns out that attendance is a HUGE predictor of current and future success in school. Please, please, please get your kids here on a daily basis. If you need a ride, call me, I will come pick them up! Hopefully you got a letter in your conferences that spelled out your child’s attendance so far. Seriously, let us know if we can help. Look below in the "Ruby Wrap" for a video from Attendance Works. They have done a great job of explaining the problem and what we can do to fix it.
This week is the Hour of Code week. Schools all across the country are trying to get their codes to do at least ONE hour of coding. It turns out it is fun, educational, and where many jobs of the future will be. Google “What Most Schools Don’t Teach” to see one of my favorite YouTube videos - It is actually down below in this version!
Are you getting our Remind messages to your cell phone as a text message? If not, text @rbstars to the number 81010. I will be able to communicate directly with you through the Remind app. Has your cell number changed? You can log in and update all of your info.
Our last announcement is saved for a parent education program coming to AUSD – School Smarts. School Smarts is a product of the California PTA, and is designed to give parents very specific ways that they can understand the school system, and advocate for and help their child to be successful within it. Classes are Thursday nights, from 6:00 – 8:30, starting on Jan 24th AT RUBY BRIDGES. We have classes in English, Arabic, Spanish Childcare and dinner are available!
OK, that is all for now! Look for the digital versions of The Star to come the next few weeks via Remind, email, Twitter or posted to our website.
