Social-Emotional Learning Tidbit of the Week -
Here are some of the big ideas and take-aways from our session.
Reasons for class meetings:
Address specific topics that have happened in your classroom.
Work on addressing a specific social/emotional skill.
To help build self-esteem by getting students involved in classroom decisions.
To build a climate of trust and respect between teachers and students, as well as among students.
- Procedures - when, where, how?
- Refer to Social Contract prior to beginning
- Let students know the purpose of the meeting.
- Use every opportunity to highlight positive skills and explicitly teach new ones.
- Have a plan.
Here is a sample prompt/activity for a class meeting:
“Life is Good” rolling ball activity as a class meeting:
As we roll a ball to others around the circle, we name things that bother us, while remembering the good things in life by adding, “and life is good.” Note: This activity is not about pretending that challenges don’t exist, we are acknowledging the challenge, then reframing it by bringing awareness to the positive things in our lives too.
Say to class: We’re going to roll this ball to each other. When the ball comes to you, name one thing that is bothering you. Then roll the ball to someone else while saying, “and life is good.”
Variation: “Still, I Feel Lucky”: After the student names something they’re unhappy about, they say something positive about the same topic as they pass the ball to another student. For example, “I had a fight with my friend today...still, I feel lucky to have my friend.”
We did this yesterday in our session and it was great. It helps students appreciate the bright side of any situation. Lousma is a great resource on campus if you'd like some guidance.

COURSE GUIDE PROVIDED TO TEAM LEADERS...
Curriculum documents need to be updated by January 30. There will be a curriculum update session to choose next Monday. Additionally, you can have time on the half day to update them.
Positive Affirmations for students and staff!
I can not emphasize this enough....
It is super easy to get into the rut of correcting others all day long in our job...
Did you know for a positive climate to exist in your classroom the ratio of positive to negative comments should be 7:1!!??
Make a point of highlighting the good things kids and your colleagues are doing. Stu and I would love to know about it, too so we could help highlight and affirm!
Positive referral form is in the works, but for now, just shoot us a quick email!
Friday, January 24, is a 1/2 day
8:10 - 8:55 - 1st period
9:00 - 9:50 - 2nd period
10:45 - 11:30 - 4th period
We will meet in Coach Kassell's room from 1:30 - 2:00. After that time, if you have not updated your unit plans by that time, you will need to spend that time updating based on your nine weeks data and pacing. You can also use that time to update your Sped documentation.
Oldies but goodies...
FIRST 15, LAST 15 MINUTES OF CLASS ARE A NO FLY ZONE. DON'T ALLOW STUDENTS TO LEAVE YOUR CLASS DURING THESE TIMES. FIRST 5, LAST 5 DURING ADVISORY.
Club or UIL Academic Sponsor?
Please add your meeting time to this schedule so we know who has what and when -

Students will need to have passes to leave advisory to go to a club. If we can't get this organized and we end up having a lot of students wandering the hallways, we will have to go back to clubs only on Fridays. :(
Read this- put in zeroes for missing work
Please be sure to enter zeroes as they happen. You will also notice that students are often quicker to turn in their late assignments when there is a zero as a placeholder instead of an X.
Of course, when they turn in the assignment late, you can change it (Stu wanted me to put that part in there in case you were confused).
Thank you!!!!
Does the re-do policy apply to nine weeks tests?
However, remember, they need to submit the re-do form within 2 days of receiving their posted grade.
That might mean you have to turn in an incomplete for them and then they have until the following Friday at 4:00 pm to update the grade.
Advisory Changes Protocol
If you would like to make a change to a student in your advisory, you need to send an email requesting the change to Mrs. Huerta and include the teacher who is the current advisory teacher of the student.
That way everyone is in the loop.
If you don't do it this way, Mrs. Huerta will send the email back to you!
check this out! Students must complete this form to retest/redo!
