Introducing New YCS Interpreter!
Hello,
I would like to take this opportunity to introduce myself. My name is Mistique Jassu. I am a wife, mother of three, and photographer by trade. My family and I recently relocated from Miami, Florida where I was born and raised to Burnsville, NC. Both my parents immigrated to the US from Cuba at a young age and raised me speaking Spanish as my mother tongue. During my college years, I travelled the world extensively and even spent a few years living abroad in places like Australia, France, Africa and Asia. During my time in these places, I studied different languages and volunteered as a humanitarian in many third world countries. I finally graduated college with a major in Intercultural Communications and a minor in French. Before graduating I spent a semester doing my student practicum with a Refugee Non profit Organization in Chattanooga, TN. During my time there, I gained a lot of experience helping refugees that came from all over the world. I helped them assimilate and transition smoothly into life in the US. I helped take them to Dr appointments, job interviews and other similar things. After graduating from my University, I moved to Korea where I became an ESL teacher to adults as well as children. After that I moved to Uganda where I began a Masters Program in International Development. I studied hands on in Uganda and Rwanda for about a year and someday hope to finish that program. These experiences enriched me and truly gave me the passion I have for languages and cultures till today.
I am confident that my acquired abilities , education, experiences, and skills satisfy the requirements for this position. I am truly excited to be here and want to thank you all for the opportunity. Thanks for having me and I look forward to meeting you all.
Kindly,
Mistique Jassu
Hello from Rotary Club of Burnsville!
Fall is upon us and the Rotary Club of Burnsville is preparing for our 2nd Annual Flags for Heroes week November 6 - 13, 2021. Last year brought a spectacular first year as our town of Burnsville was dressed up with 220 United States flags. It was an incredible site to behold.
Besides the beauty and majesty of the flags over $20,000 was raised. After the expenses, Rotary Club of Burnsville donated $11,000 split between Feed-A-Child Yancey County, Reconciliation House and DAV of Yancey County.
The resounding sentiment of what Flags for Heroes meant to so many was summed up by a local business owner. "Flags for Heroes brought together and united a very divided community in very, very difficult times. It was truly special and we want to be a part of it in the future!" Rotary Club of Burnsville is so grateful for the opportunity to serve our community in such a way!
Flags for Heroes 2021 committee has its sights set high. We want to put up 500 United States flags and raise $50,000. The money raised after expenses will be split up between: DAV of Yancey County, Dig In, Feed-A-Child Yancey County, Reconciliation House and to purchase 10 benches for Ray Cort Park.
Who is a Hero? Rotary Club of Burnsville does not define HERO. You do! It could be a veteran. Or emergency responder, teacher, co-worker, business partner. Or possibly a spouse, child, grand child. You determine who your HERO is.
How can you help? Sponsor your Heroes for 2021. There will be brochures around town. Contact a Rotarian. We meet at Babe's Pizza and Treats on Thursday from 12-1 PM. Or complete an application through this link. https://form.jotform.com/rotaryclubofburnsvillenc/flags-for-heroes
Maybe you would like to sponsor as a business/corporation this year. Here is the link to do so: https://form.jotform.com/rotaryclubofburnsvillenc/flags-for-heroes-corporate-sponsors
There are three levels of business sponsorship:
Red Level - $1500.00 A “colony” of flags (13 flags) will be flown outside of your business. 20 Heros. 20 medallions. Recognition from the stage during the “Hero Celebration” on Nov 13 at 11 AM.
White Level - $500.00 Five (5) flags flown in the grand flag display in Town Square. 10 Heroes. 10 medallions. Recognition from the stage during the “Hero Celebration” on Nov 13 at 11 AM.
Blue Level - Five (2) flags flown in the grand flag display in Town Square. 5 Heroes. 5 medallions. Recognition from the stage during the “Hero Celebration” on Nov 13 at 11 AM.
There will be two events recognizing our heroes. November 11 at 10 AM will be the Veteran’s Day program and November 13 at 11 AM will be the “Hero Celebration.”
Let us together fill our town with beauty and majesty!
