Friday, January 11, 2019 - Happy New Year!
Perspective Unit
5th Grade continues our Unit 4 in reading focusing on the Civil Rights Movement. The unit focuses on the essential question - How do we really know what happened in the past? We will continue our work on reading primary and secondary sources and how they provide various perspectives of the same event. 5th grade will be setting goals based on their reading MAP data. Also, students should be reading every night for 30 minutes. Research supports when a student reads consistently every night, they make significant gains.
Grammar/Writing
Students are wrapping up their informational writing projects! Students chose very unique and interesting topics. Their writing will be showcased as a Rose Glen Gazette article. Please ask your child to share their great writing work! Students are continuing the Greek and Latin Roots units for spelling and vocabulary. They are so excited when they find a unit word in their literature! Please make sure they are studying and using their Quizlet every night!
Math Workshop
Next week, the fifth grade students will start Unit 5: Best Buys, Ratios, and Rates - Addition and Subtraction of Fractions. The focus of this Fosnot unit is addition and subtraction of fractions and the development of students' understanding of equivalence of fractions, proportional reasoning, and rates.
The Big Ideas for This Unit
- fractions express relationships --the size or amount of the whole matters
- fractions may represent division
- to maintain equivalence , the ratio of the related numbers must be kept constant
- equivalence is preserved when corresponding equivalent parts are combined
- to compare, add or subtract fractions a common whole is needed
February Conferences
Fifth grade is changing their format for the February Parent/Teacher Conferences. Fifth grade will be doing combined conferences with both your student's fifth grade teachers. With this format change, fifth grade has added another day to the conference schedule. Fifth Grade conferences are scheduled for February 20th, the 21st, and February 28th. Watch for upcoming information about the times and signing up through SignUpGenius.
Mrs. Edwards' January Guidance Lesson
This month, the classroom guidance lesson addressed anger management and developing coping skills. Students learned to identify different emotions and strategies to help them manage their emotions. Coping skills help improve mental well-being and strengthen our abilities to handle difficult situations. The school counselor provides an activity done in class to further learning. Ask your student about this activity and the things they’ve learned from it.

The students from West High School always demonstrate a tremendous amount of enthusiasm when showcasing their passion toward music, and it is a presentation that our kids truly have enjoyed in previous years.
Upcoming Les Paul Guidance Counselor Visit
On Friday, January 25th, Deb Cahill, a Les Paul Middle School guidance counselor, will make a visit with our 5th graders. Mrs. Cahill's presentation will cover a brief overlook of what 6th grade will be like at Les Paul Middle School. She will talk about what a daily schedule will look like for your student, and what choices the families can make when choosing optional courses, such as band, choir, general music, or orchestra.
