September 2019
News from the Principal
Welcome to the 2019 – 2020 school year! We are off to a great start with many exciting things happening. Online enrollment went great this year! Remember, you can use your ParentVue account to update phone numbers and contacts and also check on student progress.
Guidelines for Success
We have spent a lot of time with our students talking about how to be successful! We are looking for students to show us their PAWS each and every day.
Our Guidelines for Success are:
Practice Safety
Act Respectfully
Widen Your Thinking
Strengthen Your Engagement
Ask your child today how they show these traits while at school and at home!
New Staff
I'd like to welcome some new faces to McLean this year. Mrs. Wilbert is our new 2nd grade teacher. In the Library, you'll meet Mrs. Daniels - she is splitting her time between McLean and Bostic Elementary. And lastly...welcome to Mrs. Dauber, our new nurse - she's here to help you with any of your health needs. We are so happy to have them here!
Arrival Times
If students are eating breakfast, they can arrive at 8:30 and enter the building to go to the cafeteria. If students are being dropped off for the day, they should not arrive any earlier than 8:45 a.m. and wait in the front two lines for the bell to ring at 8:50. The first bell will ring and the students can enter and go to their classroom. Our second bell rings at 9:00 a.m. and any student arriving after that time is considered late and will need a pass from the office. Parents should walk students in to sign in after 9:00 a.m.
Dismissal
Thank you for your work in learning our new dismissal areas. You learned very quickly where kids are picked up. As always, think of safety for the students and have them walk on the sidewalks, follow the safety patrol's whistles and signs, and obey all traffic laws. Please have cell phones away while driving with and around our students.
Thanks to a great start to the year!!!

PTA Memberships: If you want to have a say in how PTA raises and spends money, please consider joining. Dues are $5, and you can join at any time. We support Kansas PTA and the National PTA with a large portion of our membership dues; this allows them to lobby our lawmakers on behalf of your children. Our PTA has short term and long term opportunities to support students: you can serve on a committee (such as the Field Day committee) or as a volunteer in or out of school. We are always happy to have new members and volunteers. We are proud to be WildCats at McLean because we exhibit a large amount of parent and community participation.
First PTA Meeting, September 10th, 6:30pm in the McLean library. Free babysitting will be available.
Scholastic Book Fair brings "An Arctic Adventure: Snow Much to Read" to school September 23-27.
Follow us on Facebook! We will communicate important information such as upcoming events, due dates, and urgent volunteer needs. If there are changes to events or PTA meetings, you will also find this on our Facebook Page. www.facebook.com/McLeanPTA
Questions? Contact PTA Presidents, Raven Jones by email or leave a note for PTA in the office.
THE STAFF AT MCLEAN WOULD LIKE TO THANK PTA FOR THEIR BACK-TO-SCHOOL BREAKFAST DURING REPORT WEEK!
Nutrition Services Information
If you wish to apply for free or reduced meal benefits and have not, please do so. If you received meal benefits last year it does not mean you will automatically receive them this year without completing an application or getting a letter from the state of Kansas. Right now your student may have the same meal status as last year due to being in a grace period. The grace period will end September 25th and if you have not applied and been approved you will be responsible for full price meals. Any questions you may contact Nutrition Services at 316-973-2160. You may also follow the Titan link to create a parent portal for adding money to your student’s meal account, viewing transactions and meal history.
Online Meal Benefits Application
The online meal application is available in both English and Spanish at the link below.

Things to Remember
- Please keep in mind purchasing milk by itself (to go along with a lunch from home) or a second milk (to go along with a lunch from school which includes 1 milk) is considered an A La Carte purchase regardless of free or reduced status.
- An A La Carte milk costs $0.50. Your student needs to have at least $0.50 in their General lunch account to make this purchase. Please discuss this with your student and bring money to put your student’s account for future purchases if desired. Please call our office with further questions. Thank you!
- If your student is eating school breakfast they may enter the building at 8:30 a.m. and go straight to the gym. Please try to have them here no later than 8:45 a.m. for breakfast so they have enough time to eat and get to their classroom by 9:00 a.m.
Site Council
Site Council will be meeting at least 4 times this year to assist the Principal as an advisory capacity. We meet in the evenings, so If you are interested in becoming a member, please contact Mrs. Graves.
Last year, we discussed our Family Engagement , Budget, and ways to improve our student attendance and tardies. We also previewed our district's change to Standards Referenced Grading and helped craft plans to communicate changes with our families. Each year we also work to help keep our playground safe by sponsoring Sticker Picking Parties (the plants that end up on shoes, pants, laces!)
We welcome your input.
