Shoemaker Newsletter
February, 2019
Dear Shoemaker Families,
As we enter our third marking period (hard to believe), I would like to thank you for your ongoing support. We value the relationships that we have with our families and appreciate all that you do at home! Our Read-a-thon went extremely well, and we could not have done it without you! February brings our PTO Bingo Night, another family favorite! Please do not ever hesitate to call or e-mail me.
Warmest regards,
Jacqueline Vogel

Dear Parent/Guardians,
Wow! I can’t believe the school year is half over already. The time has really flown. I want to take this opportunity to thank you for supporting all of our Community Service projects so far. We took a break this past month to help support the PTO with the Read-a-thon. However, the students from the Community Service Club were still busy and they participated in the Heifer Project. They spent the month of December collecting change at home and all together we made a donation of $410. The students who participated decided to designate their money to be used to purchase a goat, a sheep, two chickens and a portion of a well and pump. These items will go to villages in underdeveloped countries. The Community Service Club also used the profits from the school store to make a donation of $500 to the Red Cross to help those in California who lost everything in the wildfires.
Coming up in February we will be collecting dog and cat food and supplies for Forgotten Felines and Fidos animal shelter. Donations can be placed in the boxes in the lobby. They are always happy to receive old towels and blankets too. In March we will be participating in Pennies for Patients for the Leukemia/Lymphoma Society. More information regarding PFP will follow at the end of February.
If you have any questions, please call me at 610-965-1626 ext 1 or email me at bringer@eastpennsd.org.
Thank you again,
Mrs. Ringer

The Lucy Calkins Writing Program for K-5 includes Units of Study in Opinion, Information, and Narrative Writing. The program helps teachers provide their students with instruction and opportunities for practice to help them meet and exceed their writing goals. Across each unit, trade books are used to model effective writing techniques, encourage students to read as writers, and provide background knowledge.
Here’s a closer look into the Workshop Framework of the writing program:
- Each session begins with a minilesson. Students sit with a long-term partner while in the minilesson.
- The minilesson ends with the students being sent off to their own independent work.
- As students work, the teacher confers with them and leads small groups.
- Partway through independent work time, the teacher delivers a mid-workshop teaching point.
- The workshop ends with a share.
Students and teachers have been enjoying working through the units and incorporating writing and strategies across all subject areas throughout the day.

Who You Gonna Call? Well, 3rd grade artists of course!
This week in Art Class, Mr. Shreck had a major treat for the 3rd grade students.
IDW Comic and Ghostbusters World App Artist Tim Lattie heard that Mr. Shreck had shown the students some original art that he had drawn and inked for his comics during their lesson. Mr. Lattie was extremely touched that his artwork was being used as a way to connect what the students were doing with their projects to work done as a professional artist.
So as a special treat, Mr. Lattie drew something special for the students, took a video of him “inking" the drawing just as they had done, and then sent a bunch of posters of that artwork to raffle off in class and give to the students. There was even a special message from Dr. Peter Venkman. Congrats 3rd grade and thank you Tim Lattie!!!!
Attention: Looking for 2019 Shoemaker Art
I hope you have taken some time to marvel at the wonderful artwork on the walls of Shoemaker. Believe it or not, there are still some blank spaces, so we are looking for some more amazing pieces of art from our students. We don’t have many spaces left over, so the judges are going to be looking for your best work. Take your time and give it your best!
We only ask that you follow a few rules for this contest:
You must get ALL supplies on your own. If you have any problems getting supplies, please come to Mr. Trexler.
The picture must be able to fit into an 8 X 10 frame.
The artwork should be the individual effort of a child.
You can submit no more than 3 pieces of artwork.
Acceptable mediums of drawing / painting include pencil, crayon, watercolor, oil paint, computer drawing, etc.. Photographs, wires, and other 3D objects are not acceptable. The completed artwork must be on a flat piece of paper (drawing, construction, etc.). Please do not use lined paper.
Your first and last name, class # and year you completed the artwork should be on the back.
All art projects are to be completed at home. However, you can use art work you have completed previously.
You must submit your artwork to Mr. Trexler by March 19, 2019 by 3:35 PM. No artwork will be accepted on March 22.
Please see Mr. Trexler with any questions.
We wish you all the best. Let’s show the teachers, students, and families how amazingly talented Shoemaker students are.
Sincerely,
Shoemaker Teachers and Staff
