Navigating Forward, Together
11.20.20
Hello Oakland Families,
Thank you so much for your time this week in partnering with your child's teacher at conferences. I know that they were all grateful to have the opportunity to share your child's successes and future goals. As we come into next week, we hope that you have the opportunity to recharge and relax with those that you love.
We are so grateful to have the opportunity to work with you and your children this year. Though the year has not been what any of us would have wanted, we are in this together and could not ask for better partners. For those that celebrate, have a lovely Thanksgiving.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Adams and Lindsay Burns

Information from our Student Services Department
Dear Parent or Guardian,
Though we have converted back to a full remote learning model, please realize that your school nurses are still here as a resource to help you through this COVID pandemic. We make every effort to remain up to date with the guidelines outlined by the Lake County Health Department and therefore want to continue being a source of information and guidance to you.
Due to the recent volume of positive cases, the Health Department may not have been able to make phone contact with all of the affected individuals in the county. We are here to help support you through the process and answer your questions about isolation, quarantine, close contacts, and more. The ultimate goal is to keep your family and our community safe and healthy.
We ask that you please continue to keep us informed of positive cases within your household so we can provide guidance and help prevent further spread. You can contact us anytime via email or call our offices. If we are not in the office the day you call, please leave a voicemail as we will be checking our messages daily during regularly scheduled business days. Email is currently the best way to reach us. Please note, absences should still be reported to the attendance hotline.
Our hope is that by working together, we can keep our families and community healthy and get our students back to school as soon as possible. Be well and stay safe.
We are here for you,
Your District 34 Health Services Team

Gratitude in the Time of Covid
Excerpted from Wendy Wisner's "10 Ways to Teach Your Kids Gratitude This Thanksgiving." 11/17/2020. VeryWellFamily.com.
How Practicing Gratitude Can Help with the Challenges of COVID-19
Practicing gratitude is always in fashion, but this year our children are in need of it more than ever. This pandemic has been stressful for everyone, but especially children. Virtually all of our children spent last spring in lockdown, separated from their schools, extended families, and friends.
It may feel less possible this year to practice gratitude, but really, this is exactly the year to emphasize gratitude! Practicing gratitude with your kids is actually a wonderful way to work through the stress they are experiencing as they celebrate the holidays under the “new normal”—because the truth is, as much as things have changed, the basics of family connection (even digitally) and savoring a simple dish of food together, have stayed the same. Highlighting this truth can be comforting at a time like this.
What Are the Benefits of Practicing Gratitude?
Practicing gratitude isn’t just a nice thing to do in theory: it has real, tangible benefits on both our physical and mental health. Practicing gratitude may be as simple as making a conscious effort to count your blessings, writing down what you are grateful for in a journal, sharing your gratitude with others, practicing good deeds in your community, or discussing what you are grateful for with a therapist or counselor.
Practicing gratitude may look different for everyone, and it's not something that should be forced. There’s no one right way to do it, but the benefits can be plentiful.
For example, research has found that people who regularly practice gratitude:
- Experience less depression
- Have lower rates of anxiety
- Are less prone to feelings of anger and resentment
- Have lower overall rates of negative emotions or negative thought patterns
- Have better decision-making skills
- Are better equipped to deal with adversity
- Build stronger and more lasting relationships
- Experience greater life satisfaction
Health benefits of practicing gratitude include:
- Improved sleep
- Fewer symptoms of physical pain
- An increased likelihood of taking up exercise
- Decreased levels of body inflammation
- Decreased blood pressure
There are so many ways that you can practice gratitude with your children, on Thanksgiving and beyond. Even the littlest kids can join in on some of these activities, and they should, because teaching and practicing gratitude starts young.
