Sehome High School Mariner Memo
Week of January 4-8, 2021
Note from the Principal
I hope that each of you had a great holiday season even during these strange and crazy times. I know that I sure enjoyed spending time away from the computer- wandering around in the snow, reading several books, feasting on delicious treats, and spending time with my family. It was some much needed time to relax, regroup, and reflect. 2020 was a crazy year, but also a year filled with opportunities for thankfulness. I know that I learned so much about our community and about myself during this year. I am excited and hopeful to see what 2021 has in store.
On December 16, Governor Inslee held a press conference regarding schools and bringing back students for in-person learning. Dr. Baker also provided some reflections and his thinking after that press release. The Whatcom Health Department also released updated guidance on reopening schools. Our high school schedule committee has been meeting regularly to continue discussing different options for hybrid learning as we continue to move forward with bringing more students into the building. I cannot begin to explain how excited I am to dream about the days that we are in a position to safely bring students back into the building! If you have any questions, ideas, or feedback on what would work best for you and your family, please contact me! I would love to hear from you.
When we are at a place where we can bring additional students into the building, we know that there are some families that will want to continue to have their students remain home full time and access their Sehome classes remotely. Our thinking right now is that this will continue to be an option for all students through the remainder of the school year. If you are interested in discussing this option, please contact me at sonia.cole@bellinghamschools.org. It is helpful for us to have an idea of how many people are considering this option as we are planning.
I am excited to announce that Sehome High School was selected to the final cohort as one of the University of Washington's inclusionary practices demonstration sites. Demonstration sites are schools committed to providing transformational learning experiences to aid their colleagues who are working to build inclusionary practices at their own schools. We will share our journey to becoming a more inclusive school with educators from across Washington State. We are excited to share the work we have been doing in this area and also look forward to learning from experts in the field about to continue to improve our practices to support all learners to better meet the needs of all students.
As always, please reach out with any questions, concerns, feedback, or positive things you see happening. I love hearing from you!
Looking forward to an incredible 2021 serving all of you.
