At Cottonwood Creek, we value...

  • Differences. We recognize and celebrate each individual for their diversity.

  • Authentic and relevant learning experiences that promote independence, curiosity, creativity and critical thinking for ALL.

  • Perseverance, patience and relationships built around empathy and kindness.

  • Collaborative learning for both staff and students.
  • Physical and psychological safety.
Dear Cottonwood Creek Families,

While we continue to navigate the 2021-22 school year, we have begun planning for next year. I am excited to share that we have finalized our 2022-23 Staffing Plan, begun interviewing for next school year, and have officially begun the class placement process.

With the excitement of a new year, also comes the bittersweetness of saying goodbye to some of our Cougar Staff. I will continue to share with you staffing information as things are finalized. I hope this provides you with an opportunity to say goodbye to staff you and your children have developed strong relationships with over the years. This week, please join me in wishing the following staff the very best in their next adventure: Lynn Baer, Allison Leggieri, Marie Toole, Shana Eilers, and Jessica Neal.

As the school year begins to wrap up, my principalship will also come to an end. My journey here has been a humbling experience, and it is the staff, you and your children that have made it rewarding. I can't imagine doing it with any other staff, community, or students; you make me proud to be a Cougar!

Finally, I'd like to share that Mr. Drew Francis will be the next principal of Cottonwood Creek Elementary. You should have received a message yesterday from Heather Woodward, Executive Director of Elementary Education. However, I've also included Principal Francis' letter of introduction below. I've had the opportunity to connect with Principal Francis and know he will be a great addition to the Cougar family.

Thank you,

Katie Johnson

Principal

2022-23 Cottonwood Creek Principal Message

April 7, 2022

Good Afternoon Cottonwood Creek Elementary Community,

My name is Drew Francis and I am honored and excited to be the Principal of Cottonwood Creek for the 2022-23 school year. I am coming into this position after serving 26 years in education and have been fortunate to have been in various leadership roles over the last 18 years. I have been a teacher in the US, as well as an international stint in Mexico. I have also been an educational consultant, adjunct professor, and served as principal in several elementary schools. I look forward to the opportunity to partner with students, staff, and families to build on the great work and traditions already in place. Finally, I hope to inspire the students, staff, and families of Cottonwood Creek Elementary as we begin our transition together.

Sincerely,

Mr. Drew A. Francis

Why 'Deeper Learning' Is an Equity Move

WHERE: ZOOM

MEETING ID: 726 009 3395

WHEN: WEDNESDAY, April 20, 2022 at 5:45pm

AGENDA

  • 5:45-5:55 Announcements and Introduction to Belleview, Cottonwood, and High Plains P.A.S.S. communities.
  • 5:55-6:00 Welcome by Belleview Principal Shelley Dulsky, J.D., Ed.S.
  • 6:00 – 6:50 Scott McLeod, J.D., Ph.D., University of Colorado (Denver), Professor, Leadership for Education Organizations: During this conversation we will talk about why 'deeper learning' is an equity move for P-12 schools and districts. EVERY child deserves opportunities for deeper learning. We can do better than current deficit models! Deficit models for children abound in our schools, particularly for low-income students, students of color, students with disabilities, and students for whom English is not their primary language. In addition to these deficit models, we also have school 'turnaround' models that emphasize doubling down on already-unsuccessful structures ("let's double the time in math!") and then also doubling down on draconian discipline structures when children push back. We need to fundamentally rethink how we think about learning, teaching, and schooling. 'Deeper learning' can be a pathway forward because it emphasizes student interest, agency, empowerment, and meaning-making, as well as real-world relevance.
  • 6:50-7:00 Question & Answer/Closing

A Message from Allison Leggieri, our Speech Language Pathologist

After much careful thought and consideration, I have made the difficult decision to leave Cottonwood Creek at the end of this school year. I want to take this opportunity to thank each of you for your collaboration and support throughout my six years spent as a Cougar. I have learned so much from this community and our kids over these years – and for that, I am grateful. I wish you all the very best.

- Allison

A Message from Ms. Shana Eilers, 1st Grade Teacher

Cottonwood Creek Community,

I want to thank you for an amazing three years as a Cougar! I have decided to take a year off of teaching. I feel lucky to have such wonderful memories of the students, families, and staff I had the pleasure of working with. Thank you for all of your support, love and kindness... this isn't 'goodbye', just 'see you later'!

From,

Shana Eilers

A Message from Lynn Baer, 4th Grade Teacher

Dear Students and Families,

Thank you to all for being so welcoming to me! Although I had a short stay at Cottonwood, all of you have forever impacted me as a teacher and these two years have been two of my best! I have made the difficult yet exciting decision to return to Polton (my previous school) next fall. I'll always remember my years as a Cougar!

From,

Lynn Baer
