Who Do You Say I Am?

Matthew 16:13-20

Reflection

Each person thinks of Jesus differently. In the passage some people say he is John the Baptist, Elijah, Jeremiah, or a prophet. Peter says that Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus sees that his father revealed this to Peter. As God revealed that truth to Peter, so God reveals other things to us. I personally see Jesus as both human and divine. As a human Jesus is the carpenter who had feelings and worked to spread the Good News, like his divine aspect, the Word of God would do.

Insights

From the footnotes of the Bible verse, I learned that Peter is a witness to Jesus being the Messiah so that he could overcome death.

Biblical Passages

John 6:64-69

'"But there are some of you who do not believe." Jesus knew from the beginning the ones who would not believe and the one who would betray him. And he said, "For this reason I have told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted him by my Father." As a result of this, many of his desciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him. Jesus then said to the Twelve, "Do you also want to leave?" Simon Peter answered him, "Master, to whom shall we go" You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God."'

Isaiah 22:22

"I will place the key of the House of David on his shoulder; what he opens, no one will shut, what he shuts, no one will open."
