What Does an Elementary School Counselor Do?

School counselors are professional educators with a mental health perspective who understand and respond to the challenges presented by today’s diverse student population. Elementary school counselors work with every student to improve academic achievement, personal and social development, and career planning.

As an elementary school counselor, I manage a comprehensive, developmental, results-based school counseling program that promotes and enhances student success. I teach classroom counseling lessons, facilitate small counseling groups on various needed topics, and counsel children individually on a short-term basis. I consult and collaborate with the principal, teachers, and parents. Working together we create safe harbors for children. The knowledge, attitudes, and skills that students acquire in the areas of academic, career, and personal/social development during the elementary years serve as the foundation for future success.

Elementary school counselors help children manage any problems that are keeping them from being the best learners they can be. When problems arise, whether they are occurring at school or at home, I help children to find their own best solutions to their problems. When children feel good about themselves, they have a much better chance to be academically successful. Parents can reach me by phone at 694-7826 or by email abender@otsegops.org.

Otsego Public Schools uses an electronic service to distribute fliers to our families. Parents not only receive an email with the flier but can also reference all of the fliers that have been posted for each school with just the click of a button. No more weeding through emails, use Peachjar as a quick reference.

It is also important that all parents have an email address in Infinite Campus as this is how we will create the email lists for schools. Be sure to update your contact information in Infinite Campus. Please call our office if you need assistance.
