SLE WEEKLY UPDATE
September 2, 2022
Dear East Families,
The first day of school is Tuesday, September 6th and we are excited to meet with our students and start a new school year! Our first day is a half day, starting at 7:20 and ending at 10:34 a.m. Parents are reminded to pick up and drop off in front of the main entrance off Johns Road. Please review our Pick Up & Drop Off video. Also, please take a moment to review, the student handbook (which can also be found on our website) as well as bus route and schedule information in Skyward before Tuesday. Finally, as part of our security procedures, we ask that parents and students be prepared to show identification and be buzzed in at the main entrance when they need to enter the school after the bell rings first hour and until 2:13 p.m. each day.
Please note that there have been a few schedule and room changes and students should check their schedule on Skyward before Tuesday morning for updates. Also, please review our bell schedules below. Tuesday, September 6 is a half day of school. The First full day of school is Wednesday, September 7.
Thank you & Be EAST!

BACK TO SCHOOL REGISTRATION & SCHEdULES
Thank you to those who have completed the annual back to school online registration process via Skyward Family Access. Parents/Guardians must complete this process prior to your student attending school.
If you have not completed the Skyward Back to School Online Registration Process, the following are some quick tips that may help:
Parents must do this for each of their students registered with South Lyon Schools, regardless of the learning option they are participating in.
The online registration process should be completed by the family member who is identified as Family 1. The person identified as family 1 is the only one who can complete the online registration process.
If you don’t know YOUR Skyward Family Access Login and password (Not your students account), please click on “Forgot your Login/Password?” and follow the prompts.
Student's schedules will be available to view in Skyward on September 2 if the Back to School Process has been completed.
Security Updates
South Lyon Community Schools is committed to the safety and security of our students, staff, and families. We employ a number of safety and security measures to help ensure the safety of all who learn, work, and play within our buildings.
Some of the measures we have in place include the following:
Safety Advisory Team (includes members from local law enforcement)- Reviews safety-related practices/procedures and makes recommendations to the administration to add to, revise, or refine as may be appropriate or necessary
Emergency Operations Plan- Developed in partnership with local law enforcement and contains standard procedures to respond to numerous emergency incidents
Annual ALICE review and table-top exercises with staff and law enforcement
Review and practice safety procedures with students and staff throughout the year
Secured entryways (require key or fob to access)
Controlled entrances (buzzer, camera, electronic latch)
Secure vestibules (in several buildings, others being added)
Thumb locks (ability to lock classroom door quickly w/o key)
Surveillance cameras
South Lyon Police Department present before/after school and perform walkthroughs of Elementary/Middle Schools located in South Lyon
Three full-time School Resource Officers from the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office
Coordination with each law enforcement jurisdiction serving the district (Oakland County Sheriff’s Department, South Lyon Police Department, Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office, Green Oak Police Department)
"Nightlock" door barricade devices were purchased this summer and are being installed throughout our school buildings. Installation will be complete before the first day of school. These devices are to be engaged during a lockdown/ALICE event (when individuals are not escaping through the door equipped with the device) and will increase the security of our classrooms, offices, and other lockdown locations throughout the district.
Also this fall, we will be contracting with a safety/security consultant who will perform an assessment of each of our facilities. The assessment will include a review of existing physical and technical safety measures as well as safety-related policies and procedures. Following the comprehensive assessment, we will receive feedback on existing security measures and cost-effective strategies to improve safety and security. The Safety Advisory Team will review the findings and recommend actionable next steps for the district. The 2022-23 Michigan School Aid budget includes funding for school safety. We will look to maximize available funds to enhance the many security measures already in place throughout SLCS.
We take all incidents involving student and staff safety seriously and appreciate our partnerships with local law enforcement officials. We ask students, parents, and community members to report all suspicious or threatening activity to law enforcement and/or school/district administration immediately. Information can also be shared using the OK2SAY hotline by calling 1-855-565-2729 or texting to 652729.

ATTENDANCE GUIDELINES
To report a student's absence or to excuse a student for early release please leave a message on the Attendance Line - (248) 573-8710.
Absences are cumulative for the entire semester. On the occasion of each unexcused absence, the Office will send a Skylert message for an unexcused absence to the parent. Good attendance is critical for each student’s academic success. Should your child be exhibiting signs of illness, the guidelines below may help you decide whether to have them miss school.
Students are expected to come to class daily and arrive at all six of their classes on time. Encouraging students to be respectful of others is key to ensuring that we maintain a safe and welcoming learning environment for all. As an institution that educates teenagers, we realize that instilling these habits now will help ensure a positive entrance into post-secondary education and the workplace. Please note, that all students participating in co-curricular and extra-curricular activities are expected to be in attendance for the FULL SCHOOL DAY in order to participate in any competitions or events on that day.
