The Mentor is a figure in literature that acts as a role model or conscious for the story's hero, often giving him or her gifts or training.
Gandalf
Appearing inTolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings Trilogy, Gandalf acts as the wise and powerful mentor to the stories' various protagonists, getting them started on their journey, and providing sage advice as they progress.
Professor Xavier
In Marvel Comics' X-Men series, Xavier trains young mutants to use their powers effectively and responsibly, using his wealth and wisdom to give students both training and a safe harbor from those who would persecute them.
Obi Wan (Ben) Kenobi
In Star Wars: A New Hope, Obi Wan gets Luke started on his adventure, giving him his first light saber and beginning his first training in the use of the Force. Even after his death, his guidance proved invaluable in helping Luke succeed in his hero's journey.
